Vicente López Tovar
Vicente López Tovar (1909–1998) was a Spanish soldier, politician and Spanish maquis, anti-Franco guerrilla fighter. He fought for the Spanish Republican, Republicans in the Spanish Civil War, for the French Resistance in World War II, and led a Invasion of Val d'Aran, failed invasion of Spain in 1944 to oust Francisco Franco. After the Liberation of France Lopez Tovar was decorated with the Legion d'honneur and the Croix de Guerre. A street is named after him in Toulouse, France. Invasion of Aran Valley On 19 October 1944, López Tovar led a force of exiled anti-Franco guerrilla fighters from the Unión Nacional Española (UNE), a military organization formed by the Communist Party of Spain but that included monarchists and other political denominations, across the Pyrenees mountains into the Aran Valley. The ''Croix de Guerre'' (, ''Cross of War'') is a military decoration of France. Santiago José Carrillo Solares (18 January 1915 – 18 September 2012) was a Spanish politician who served as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Spain (main), Communist Party of Spain (PCE) from 1960 to 1982. A scorched-earth policy is a military strategy that aims to destroy anything that might be useful to the enemy. Any assets that could be used by the enemy may be targeted, which usually includes obvious weapons, transport vehicles, communication sites, and industrial resources. Aran (; ; ) (previously officially called in Occitan Val d'Aran, Catalan: ''Vall d'Aran'', Spanish: ''Valle de Arán'') is an administrative entity (formerly considered a Comarques of Catalonia, comarca) in Lleida (province), Lleida, Catalonia, Spain, consisting of the Aran Valley, in area, in the Pyrenees mountains, in the northwestern part of the province of Lleida.
