Vester Allés Kaserne
Vester Allé Kaserne is a former military barracks and listed building in the city of Aarhus. The barracks was built on the area between ''Vester Allé'', ''Frederiks Allé'' and ''Thomas Jensens Allé'' in 1875-1878 and was closed in 1969 after which the buildings were taken over by Aarhus Municipality. There are two remaining buildings left from the original complex; the ''Officersbygningen'' (The Officers Buildings) and ''Ridehuset'' (The Riding Hall). Today the riding hall today functions as a small multi-hall in Aarhus city hosting concerts, exhibitions and markets; frequently cultural events, but anyone can rent it and use it for private or commercial purposes as well. The officers building is home to Aarhus School of Music and the Aarhus Festuge secretariat. There is a small café here too - Café Monroe -, serving breakfast and lunch three days in the week and occasionally hot evening meals accompanying small concerts. Buttress
A buttress is an architectural structure built against or projecting from a wall which serves to support or reinforce the wall. Buttresses are fairly common on more ancient buildings, as a means of providing support to act against the lateral (sideways) forces arising out of inadequately braced roof structures. The term ''counterfort'' can be synonymous with buttress and is often used when referring to dams, retaining walls and other structures holding back earth. Langelandsgade Kaserne is a former military barracks in Aarhus, Denmark. It was used by the military from 1889 to 1993, when Aarhus University took ownership. After a restoration, it is now the headquarters of the Aarhus University department School of Communication and Culture (''Aarhus Universitet, Institut for Kommunikation og Kultur''). History Langelandsgade Kaserne is the oldest intact barracks still standing in Denmark. It was one of several barracks constructed in Aarhus in the late 19th century and was originally intended to house an artillery regiment. The building was designed by the architects Agathon Just Müllertz (1842-1909) and Sophus Frederik Kühnel (1851-1930). Construction began in 1887 and was finished in 1889. The building has three floors and a loft and basement. The basement housed the sutler, while the first floor was used for offices and study rooms. Carl Lange (architect)
Carl Christian Eduard Lange (5 December 1828 – 21 May 1900) was a Danish architect known primarily for his works on manors and churches in Jutland and several prominent buildings in Aarhus. Biography Carl Lange was born in Copenhagen to Christian Suhr Lange and Anne Sophie Torp. Initially he was trained as a watchmaker but the work did not interest him and he instead sought admission to the Danish Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts which was granted in 1841. He graduated from the academy in 1849 with a degree in architecture. Not much is known about the years after graduation but in the 1860s he is first mentioned as the foreman for the architect Ferdinand Meldahl during the construction of the manor Frijsenborg. In the period following his work at Frijsenborg, Carl Lange was commissioned as the architect in Favrskov Municipality for the manor Frijsendal and several farm buildings for the manor Søbygård. National Romantic Style
The National Romantic style was a Nordic architectural style that was part of the National Romantic movement during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is often considered to be a form of Art Nouveau.
