Vesta Nunataks
The Vesta Nunataks () is a small group of nunataks rising to about 1,200 m, lying between Grikurov Ridge in the LeMay Range and Aeolus Ridge in Planet Heights, situated near the east coast of Alexander Island, Antarctica. In association with the names of planets and their satellites in this area, they were named after Vesta, an asteroid that lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. They were named by United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1987. Nunatak
A nunatak (from Inuit ''nunataq'') is the summit or ridge of a mountain that protrudes from an ice field or glacier that otherwise covers most of the mountain or ridge. They are also called glacial islands. Examples are natural pyramidal peaks. When rounded by glacial action, smaller rock promontories may be referred to as rognons. The word is of Greenlandic origin and has been used in English since the 1870s. Vesta (minor-planet designation: 4 Vesta) is one of the largest objects in the asteroid belt, with a mean diameter of . It was discovered by the German astronomer Heinrich Wilhelm Matthias Olbers on 29 March 1807 and is named after Vesta, the virgin goddess of home and hearth from Roman mythology. Horsa Nunataks
The Horsa Nunataks () are an isolated group of about five partly snow-covered nunataks, more than high, which rise above Roberts Ice Piedmont, north of Mount Calais, in the northeastern part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. They were first photographed from the air in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition under John Rymill, and were surveyed from the ground in 1948 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey. The names for these nunataks and for the isolated Hengist Nunatak to the south are for the brother chieftains, Hengist and Horsa, who were believed to have led the first Saxon bands which settled England in the fifth century. Caninus Nunatak
Caninus Nunatak () is a nunatak, about high, located east of Palindrome Buttress and the northern part of the Walton Mountains, Alexander Island. In the 1974–75 field season, the British Antarctic Survey reduced its number of dog teams. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee (or UK-APC) is a United Kingdom government committee, part of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, responsible for recommending names of geographical locations within the British Antarctic Territory (BAT) and the South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI). Such names are formally approved by the Commissioners of the BAT and SGSSI respectively, and published in the BAT Gazetteer and the SGSSI Gazetteer maintained by the Committee. The BAT names are also published in the international Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica maintained by SCAR. An asteroid is a minor planet of the inner Solar System. Grikurov Ridge
Grikurov Ridge () is a ridge that extends westward for about from the south end of the LeMay Range, in central Alexander Island, Antarctica. The feature was mapped from trimetrogon air photography taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, and from survey by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, 1948–50.
