Vespertilionidae
Vespertilionidae is a family of microbats, of the order Chiroptera, flying, insect-eating mammals variously described as the common, vesper, or simple nosed bats. The vespertilionid family is the most diverse and widely distributed of bat families, specialised in many forms to occupy a range of habitats and ecological circumstances, and it is frequently observed or the subject of research. The facial features of the species are often simple, as they mainly rely on vocally emitted echolocation. The tails of the species are enclosed by the lower flight membranes between the legs. Over 300 species are distributed all over the world, on every continent except Antarctica. It owes its name to the genus ''Vespertilio'', which takes its name from a word for bat, ', derived from the Latin term ' meaning 'evening'; they are termed "evening bats" and were once referred to as "evening birds". (The term "evening bat" also often refers more specifically to one of the species, '' Nycticeius humer ...

Parti-colored Bat
The parti-coloured bat or rearmouse (''Vespertilio murinus'') is a species of vesper bat that lives in temperate Eurasia, from Western and Southern Europe, eastwards over the Caucasus and Iran into Mongolia, north-east China, Korea, Afghanistan and northern Pakistan. Description Their twittering call, similar to a bird's call, can be heard particularly in the autumn during the mating season. The parti-coloured bat has a body size of with a wingspan of , and a weight of . Its name is derived from its fur, which has two colours. Its back (dorsal side) is red to dark-brown, with silver-white-frosted hair. The ventral side is white or grey. The ears, wings and face are black or dark brown. The wings are narrow. The ears are short, broad and roundish. It is known to live up to 12 years. Behaviour These bats hunt for their prey, for example mosquitoes, caddis flies and moths, with a wide range of ultrasonic sounds, but especially around 25–27 kHz. They hunt after twilight ...

Hypsugo
The genus ''Hypsugo'' contains many bats referred to as pipistrelles or pipistrelle bats (not to be confused with the genus ''Pipistrellus''). They belong to the family Vespertilionidae or vesper bats. They are primarily found throughout Asia, the Middle East, Mediterranean Europe, and North Africa (including the Canary Islands), with a single (debated) species in Sub-Saharan Africa. Species *'' Hypsugo affinis'' (Dobson, 1871) (chocolate pipistrelle) *'' Hypsugo alaschanicus'' (Bobrinskii, 1926) (Alashanian pipistrelle) *'' Hypsugo anthonyi'' (Tate, 1942) (Anthony's pipistrelle) *'' Hypsugo arabicus'' (Harrison, 1979) (Arabian pipistrelle) *'' Hypsugo ariel'' (Thomas, 1904) (desert pipistrelle) *'' Hypsugo cadornae'' (Thomas, 1916) (Cadorna's pipistrelle) *'' Hypsugo dolichodon'' (Görföl, 2014) (long-toothed pipistrelle) *'' Hypsugo imbricatus'' (Horsfield, 1824) (brown pipistrelle) *'' Hypsugo joffrei'' (Thomas, 1915) (Joffre's pipistrelle) *''Hypsugo kitcheneri The red-b ...

New Zealand Long-tailed Bat
The New Zealand long-tailed bat (''Chalinolobus tuberculatus''), also known as the long-tailed wattled bat or pekapeka-tou-roa (Māori), is one of 15 species of bats in the genus ''Chalinolobus'' variously known as "pied bats", "wattled bats" or "long-tailed bats". It is one of the two surviving bat species endemic to New Zealand, but is closely related to five other wattled or lobe-lipped bats in Australia and elsewhere. It was named the winner in the 2021 Bird of the Year competition in New Zealand, despite not being a bird. Description The long-tailed bat is a small brown bat (weighing 8–12 g) with a long tail connected by a patygium to its hind legs: this feature distinguishes it from New Zealand's other bat species, the short-tailed bat (''Mystacina tuberculata''). The bat's echolocation calls include a relatively low frequency component that can be heard by some people. It can fly at 60 kilometres per hour, and has a very large home range (100 km2). Falsistrellus
''Falsistrellus'' is a genus of vespertilionid family of bats, small predatory flying mammals. They are known from Australia. The poorly researched species have been variously placed by authors, and revised again by studies of their distinct characteristics, consequently the falsistrelles may also be referred to as pipistrelles or false pipstrelles. Taxonomy Common names for the species include falsistrelle and false pipistrelle. The description of the genus was published in 1943 by Ellis Le Geyt Troughton. Some authorities maintain the earlier treatment of taxa as genus ''Pipistrellus'', while other maintain this as a separate group. One revision of the genus ''Pipistrellus'' resurrected Troughton's genus to accommodate the south-eastern Australian ''Falsistrellus tasmaniensis'' and elevated the south-western Australian pupulation as a new species, '' Falsistrellus mackenziei''. The type species of the genus is ''Vespertilio tasmaniensis'', described by John Gould in 1858 ...

Western False Pipistrelle
The western false pipistrelle, species ''Falsistrellus mackenziei'', is a vespertilionid bat that occurs in Southwest Australia. The population is declining due to loss of its habitat, old growth in tall eucalypt forest which has largely been clear felled for tree plantations, wheat cultivation and urbanisation. Although it is one of the largest Australian bats of the family, the species was not recorded or described until the early 1960s. A darkly colored bat with reddish brown fur and prominent ears, they fly rapidly around the upper canopy of trees in pursuit of flying insects. Taxonomy A species of genus ''Falsistrellus'', allied to the family Vespertilionidae. A 1986 revision of morphological characters of the genus ''Pipistrellus'' separated the ''tasmaniensis'' group as the type of the new genus, the eastern false pipistrelle species ''Falsistrellus tasmaniensis'', and described this new species ''Falsistrellus mackenziei'' (western false pipistrelle). The holotype was co ...

Eastern False Pipistrelle
The eastern false pipistrelle (''Falsistrellus tasmaniensis'') is a vesper bat that occurs in eastern and south-eastern Australia, including the island of Tasmania. Taxonomy A species of genus ''Falsistrellus'', allied to the family Vespertilionidae. The bats are distinguished from a western species, '' Falsistrellus mackenziei'', by the common names eastern false pipistrelle and eastern falsistrelle. The first description was published by John Gould in his third volume of ''Mammals of Australia'', issued in 1858. It is the type species In zoological nomenclature, a type species (''species typica'') is the species name with which the name of a genus or subgenus is considered to be permanently taxonomically associated, i.e., the species that contains the biological type specimen ... for the genus ''Falsistrellus''. Alashanian Pipistrelle
The Alashanian pipistrelle (''Hypsugo alaschanicus'') is a species of bat in the family Vespertilionidae. It is found in China, South Korea, Mongolia, Japan, and Russia. It is assessed as least-concern by the IUCN. Taxonomy This species was first described by Nikolay Alekseyevich Bobrinski in 1926. The genus ''Hypsugo'' was previously considered to be within ''Pipistrellus'', but is now considered distinct. This species was previously considered to be a subspecies of '' H. savii'', but is now considered a full species. The taxonomic status of the Korean population of ''H. alaschanicus'' is unclear, with it sometimes being considered as a subspecies, and it being considered as a distinct species called ''H. coreensis'' by other authors. Biology The pipistrelle is likely an open forager. It is an insectivore. The bat echolocates at a frequency of around 35 kHz. Habitat and distribution The species is common and widespread, being found in countries across Central and East ...
