Vertical Records is an independent record label founded by Capercaillie member Donald Shaw in 2000, based in Glasgow, Scotland. Donald Shaw (musician)
Donald Shaw, (born 1967) is a Scottish musician, composer, producer, and one of the founding members of the group Capercaillie. Shaw has composed for film and TV. In 2002, he won two Royal Television Society (RTS) awards for Best Soundtrack and Best Theme in UK television for the drama Crowdie and Cream. His score for the film ''Transition'' (released in 2000) was BAFTA nominated for best soundtrack. In 2004, he composed ''Harvest'', a commission for the opening night of Celtic Connections festival. He won the Scots Trad Music Composer of the Year award in December 2006. Origins Brought up in Taynuilt, Argyll, a part of the world steeped in Gaelic song and traditional music, Shaw was involved in all styles of music from an early age. Aidan O'Rourke (musician)
Aidan O'Rourke (born 1975) is a Scottish contemporary folk music fiddle player and composer. He was named the 2014 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Musician of the Year and the Scots Trad Music Awards 2011 Composer of the Year. In addition to his solo career, O'Rourke also plays in the award-winning folk trio Lau alongside Kris Drever and Martin Green. He was one of 20 musicians commissioned for New Music 20x12 by PRS for Music Foundation to celebrate the 2012 Summer Olympics. O'Rourke has worked with Eddi Reader, Andy Sheppard, Alyth, Roddy Woomble and appears on more than eighty recordings. Previously, he was a member of Blazin' Fiddles, The Unusual Suspects and Tabache. Early life and career O'Rourke grew up in a musical family in Oban and later on the nearby island of Seil. Usher's Island (band)
Usher's Island is an Irish folk band featuring Andy Irvine, Dónal Lunny, Paddy Glackin, Michael McGoldrick and John Doyle. Their repertoire consists of Irish traditional songs and tunes (reels, jigs, slip jigs, hornpipes), as well as songs written by Irvine and Doyle, respectively. History Formation After the final incarnation of Planxty ended in early 2005, Irvine, Lunny, and Liam O'Flynn created a new quartet called LAPD, with the addition of Paddy Glackin. When O'Flynn resigned, McGoldrick and Doyle joined the remaining three members of LAPD to form Usher's Island (a reference to the Dublin quay). Jarlath Henderson
Jarlath Henderson (born 1986) is a Northern Irish folk musician. He is best known as an Uilleann piper and singer but also plays the guitar and flute. He was the youngest winner of the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award in 2003. Through his career, he has worked with bands and musicians such as Lau, Capercaillie, Julie Fowlis, Michael McGoldrick, Paddy Keenan, Salsa Celtica, Phil Cunningham, Buille, Dougie Maclean and Jack Bruce. He has also worked with Boris Grebenshikov of Aquarium on the album ''House of All Saints''. In 2016, he released his first solo album, ''Hearts Broken, Heads Turned''. In 2019, he released ''Raw''. As of 2016 he is a member of the band Atlantic Arc, led by Dónal Lunny. Henderson was born in Armagh but grew up in Dungannon. Monica Queen
Monica Queen is a singer from Glasgow, Scotland who has collaborated with Belle & Sebastian (e.g., on ''Lazy Line Painter Jane'' from the Lazy Line Painter Jane EP), Chris Coco, James Grant and Jim White, among others. She is listed on the Fire Records (UK) artists page as a contributing artist to their ''Chamber Music'' album, a 36-part tribute to James Joyce's ''Chamber Music''. She works with Johnny Smillie, with whom she co-founded Thrum, who were part of the indie scene in Glasgow in the 1990s. Thrum signed to Fire Records (UK) (home of Teenage Fanclub, Pulp and the Pastels), and released several records between 1990 and 1997. Dónal O'Connor
Dónal O'Connor is an Irish multi-instrumentalist, producer and television presenter from Ravensdale, County Louth, Ireland. He is a member of Belfast-based Irish traditional groups Ulaid & At First Light. Early life O'Connor was born into an Irish-speaking household. His father is fiddler Gerry O'Connor and his mother was singer and flute player Eithne Ní Uallacháin (d. 1999). His maternal grandparents were Pádraig Ó hUallacháin, a teacher, writer and song collector, and Eithne bean Uí Uallacháin. His paternal grandmother was fiddler and fiddle teacher Rose O'Connor. O'Connor is also the nephew of singers Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin and Len Graham. Dreamers' Circus
Dreamers' Circus is a Nordic band consisting of Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen (Denmark/Faroe Islands), Ale Carr ( Sweden) and Nikolaj Busk (Denmark). History Dreamers’ Circus formed in 2009 as a result of a jam session at a folk festival in Copenhagen. Their first performance was at a concert with the Copenhagen Philharmonic, where the trio performed a folk music version of the cadenza in Mozart’s 5th violin concerto. In 2010 Dreamers’ Circus released an EP with five tracks on the Danish label GO’ Folk. The EP was produced by Swedish guitarist Roger Tallroth, of the folk band Väsen. Also featured on the EP is Swedish folk singer Sofia Karlsson. In 2013 Dreamers’ Circus released their first full album, ''A Little Symphony'' on GO’ Folk. Dean Owens
Dean Owens is a Scottish singer songwriter, born and brought up in Leith, Edinburgh, UK. Many of Owens' songs relate to his upbringing in the area, including ''Man From Leith''. Owens’ first serious band was Smile, formed with bass player Kevin McGuire, guitarist Calais Brown and drummer Dave Stewart around 1991 or 1992. Their first single – ''Obvious'' – released on Different Class Records, reached no. 20 in the Scottish charts in 1992. His next band, the Felsons, rose from the ashes of Smile. Breabach
Breabach is a Scottish folk music band formed in 2005. In 2011, they received nominations for ‘Best Group’ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. They won Scottish Folk Band of the Year in 2012 and Live Act of the Year in 2013 at the Scots Trad Music Awards (''Na Trads''). Roddy Hart
Roderick John Hart (born 16 July 1979) is a Scottish singer–songwriter, film/TV and theatre composer, and broadcaster from Glasgow. As a solo artist, he has released three records – ''Bookmarks'', ''Sign Language'' and ''Road of Bones'' – and one EP, ''The Dylan EP'' (with Irish artist Gemma Hayes). Hart now releases albums with his band the Lonesome Fire, the first of which was the self-titled ''Roddy Hart & the Lonesome Fire'' produced by Danton Supple. Released in late 2013, the album was nominated for the Scottish Album of the Year Award in April 2014. Their second album - ''Swithering'' - was co-produced by Paul Savage (Mogwai, Emma Pollock, Admiral Fallow) and released in late 2016. James Grant (musician)
James Grant (born 8 October 1964) is a Scottish musician, singer, and songwriter. He grew up in Glasgow's Castlemilk district and still resides in the city. Friends Again James Grant's music career began in 1982 as songwriter and guitarist in the new wave band Friends Again, alongside Chris Thomson, later of the Bathers. The group had minor hit singles with "State of Art", "Sunkissed" and "Honey at the Core". They released a self-titled EP in 1983 which reached No. 59 in the UK and then recorded their debut album, ''Trapped & Unwrapped'', in 1984. On 5 June 2015, as part of the BBC Music Day at the broadcaster's Pacific Quay HQ in Glasgow, Grant and Thomson reunited to play two Friends Again songs - "State of Art" and "Honey at the Core" - for a live studio audience.
