Taxonomy The genus was circumscribed by German botanist Heinrich Adolph Schrader in 1794, with '' Verrucaria rupestris'' assigned as the type species. Verrucaria Nigrescens
''Verrucaria nigrescens'' is a widespread species of crustose lichen in the family Verrucariaceae. It was first species description, formally described as a new species by Christiaan Hendrik Persoon in 1795. The lichen produces a very dark brown thallus that saxicolous lichen, grows on rocks; the medulla (lichenology), medulla is black. There are black perithecia that resemble buried dots, and which measure 0.15–0.3 mm in diameter. Ascospores measure 14–24 by 7–11 micrometre, μm. Verrucaria Ahtii
''Verrucaria ahtii'' is a species of saxicolous (rock-dwelling) crustose lichen in the family Verrucariaceae. It is found in Finland, Lithuania, Russia, and Switzerland, where it occurs on calcareous pebbles. Taxonomy The lichen was formally described as a new species in 2017 by Juha Pykälä, Annina Launis, and Leena Myllys. The type specimen was collected by the first author in Lohja (Southwest Finland) on a high road bank northwest of a lime processing factory; there it was found growing on a pebbles that may have been enriched by calcium-rich dust. The species epithet honours Finnish lichenologist Teuvo Ahti, "for his major contributions to lichenology". The type specimen is kept in the collections of the mycological herbaria of the Botanical Museum of the Finnish Museum of Natural History. Molecular phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences from the internal transcribed spacer regions shows that ''Verrucaria ahtii'' is closely related to '' V. vitikainenii''. Descript ... Verrucaria Serpuloides
''Verrucaria serpuloides'' is a species of saxicolous (rock-dwelling), crustose lichen belonging to the family Verrucariaceae. It is native to the Antarctic Peninsula. It is one of only two permanently submerged species of lichen, the other being ''Hydrothyria venosa'', and the only one found permanently submerged in a marine environment. Collections of the species were first made in 1944 by Elke Mackenzie. The species has been discovered living up to below mean high tide. It creates jet-black patches on the base of submerged rocks.
