Augustus George Vernon Harcourt
Augustus George Vernon Harcourt FRS (24 December 1834 – 23 August 1919) was an English chemist who spent his career at Oxford University. He was one of the first scientists to do quantitative work in the field of chemical kinetics. His uncle, William Vernon Harcourt (1789–1871), founded the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Biography Harcourt was born in London in 1834 to Admiral Fredrick E. Vernon Harcourt and his wife, Marcia. Harcourt's mother was sister of the first Lord Tollemache. Augustus Harcourt was educated at Harrow School before enrolling at Balliol College, Oxford, where he took a degree in Natural Science in 1858, working with Henry Smith and Benjamin Brodie. Edward William Vernon Harcourt DL JP (26 June 1825 – 19 December 1891) was an English naturalist and Conservative politician. Life Harcourt was born in Stanton Harcourt, Oxfordshire, the son of Matilda Mary Gooch and the Rev. William Vernon Harcourt who was a scientist, and grandson of Edward Harcourt, Archbishop of York. His brother was the politician Sir William Vernon Harcourt, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Leader of the Opposition. He matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford in 1843. Career Harcourt was a J.P. for Berkshire and Sussex, and a J.P. and Deputy Lieutenant for Oxfordshire and High Sheriff of Oxfordshire in 1875. Leveson Francis Vernon-Harcourt M.I.C.E. (25 January 1839 – 14 September 1907) was a British civil engineer, author of several treatises on river and harbour engineering. Biography Leveson Francis Vernon-Harcourt was the son of Admiral Frederick Edward Vernon-Harcourt (1790–1883), a descendant of the Barons Vernon, and his wife, Marcia Delap née Tollemache (1802–1868). His elder brother was the chemist Augustus George Vernon Harcourt. He was educated at Windlesham House School, Harrow School and Balliol College, Oxford, graduating in 1861 with a first-class degree in mathematics and natural sciences. He received his training in engineering as a pupil of Sir John Hawkshaw. In 1870 he married Alice Brandreth, daughter of Lt. Col. Mount Vernon Harcourt, also unofficially known as Mount Harcourt, is a conical stratovolcano, that rises over 1,535 meters, making up part of the Hallett Peninsula extending into the Ross Sea about south of Mount Erebus, along with three overlapping shield volcanoes. The mountain was discovered in January 1841 by Sir James Clark Ross and named by him for the Reverend William Vernon Harcourt, one of the founders of the British Association. Mount Vernon Harcourt is part of the Hallett Volcanic Province of the McMurdo Volcanic Group. Two dates have been obtained from the volcano's rock, roughly 5.5 and 6.6 million years in age. The Vernon family was a wealthy, prolific and widespread English family with 11th-century origins in Vernon, Normandy, France. Their extant titles include Baron Vernon and Vernon baronets of Shotwick Park. Vernon of Shipbrook, Cheshire William de Vernon arrived in England at the time of the Norman conquest and was granted lands in the County Palatine of Chester under the patronage of Hugh d'Avranches, 1st Earl of Chester.
