Alfred Harcourt
Alfred Harcourt (; January 31, 1881 – June 20, 1954) was an American publisher and compiler who co-founded Harcourt, Brace & Howe in 1919. Biography Harcourt was the son of Gertrude M. Elting and Charles M. Harcourt. Alfred was born in New Paltz, New York to a fruit farmer and attended the New Paltz Normal School. While at the normal school Harcourt became a member of the Delphic Fraternity. An illness at age 9 led to his love for books and reading. After his studies at New Paltz, Harcourt attended Columbia University where he was an editor of the student newspaper, the Columbia Spectator. Harcourt graduated from Columbia College of Columbia University in 1904 with fellow grad Donald Brace. The two joined Henry Holt and Company before founding Harcourt Brace and Company in 1919. Henry Harcourt (1612 – 11 May 1673) was an English Jesuit. Biography Harcourt whose real name was Beaumont, third son of Sir Henry Beaumont, knt., of Stoughton, Leicestershire, by Elizabeth, daughter of Sir William Turpen, knight, of Knoptoft in that county, was born in 1612. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1630, and was made a spiritual coadjutor on 24 May 1643. In 1649 he appears in the Lancashire district, in 1655 in the Hampshire district, and in 1672 in the Suffolk Suffolk () is a ceremonial county of England in East Anglia. Thomas Whitbread
Thomas Whitbread (alias Harcourt) (1618–30 June 1679) was an English Jesuit missionary and Christian martyr, martyr, wrongly convicted of conspiracy to murder Charles II of England and hanged during the Popish Plot. Simon Harcourt, 1st Earl Harcourt, (1714 – 16 September 1777), known as Viscount Harcourt between 1727 and 1749, was a British diplomat and general who became Viceroy of Ireland. Biography Harcourt was born in Oxfordshire, the son of Hon. Simon Harcourt, M.P. for Wallingford and Abingdon, and Elizabeth Evelyn, sister of Sir John Evelyn, 1st Baronet. His father died in 1720, when Simon was still a small child. He was educated at Westminster School and in 1727 succeeded his grandfather Simon Harcourt, 1st Viscount Harcourt as 2nd Viscount Harcourt. In 1745, having raised a regiment for service during the Jacobite Rebellion, the 76th Foot (Lord Harcourts Regiment), he received a commission as a colonel in the army. Simon Harcourt, 1st Viscount Harcourt, PC (December 1661 – 29 July 1727) of Stanton Harcourt, Oxfordshire, was an English Tory politician who sat in the English and British House of Commons from 1690 until 1710. He was raised to the peerage as Baron Harcourt in 1711 and sat in the House of Lords, becoming Queen Anne's Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain. He was her solicitor-general and her commissioner for arranging the union with Scotland. He took part in the negotiations preceding the Peace of Utrecht. Robert Venables Vernon Harcourt (7 May 1878 – 8 September 1962) was a British diplomat, playwright, farmer and Liberal Party politician. Family and education Harcourt was the son of a Liberal statesman, Sir William Harcourt, who was briefly leader of the Liberal Party from 1896 to 1898 and his second wife Elizabeth Cabot Motley who was the daughter of John Lothrop Motley sometime Minister of the United States in London and author of a number of works of history. His brother, Lewis Vernon Harcourt, was also a Liberal MP and government minister. Harcourt was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took honours in the History Tripos. Sir Robert John Rolston Harcourt, JP (1902 – 25 August 1969) was a Northern Irish politician. Robert Harcourt, known as John, became the director of F. E. Harcourt and Company coal merchants. He was High Sheriff of Belfast in 1949, and later in the year unsuccessfully stood as the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) candidate for South Down. Soon after this, John William Nixon, the independent Unionist MP for Belfast Woodvale, died. Harcourt stood in the ensuing by-election on 4 April 1950 and was elected. Robert Harcourt (1574?–1631) was an English explorer, projector of a South American colony, in what was later Guiana. Life Born about 1574 at Ellenhall, Staffordshire, was the eldest son of Sir Walter Harcourt, of Ellenhall and Stanton Harcourt, Oxfordshire, by Dorothy, daughter of William Robinson of Drayton Bassett, Staffordshire. He matriculated at Oxford as a gentleman-commoner of St. Alban Hall on 10 April 1590 and stayed there about three years. On 23 March 1609, accompanied by his brother Michael and a company of adventurers, Robert Harcourt sailed for Guiana. On 11 May he arrived at the Oyapock River. Richard Harcourt
Richard Harcourt (March 17, 1849 – November 29, 1932) was a Canadian lawyer, judge, and politician. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario for the riding of Monck from 1879 to 1908. He was Ontario's treasurer from 1890 to 1899. He was born in Seneca Township, Haldimand County, Canada West in 1849, the son of Michael Harcourt who was a member of the parliament for the Province of Canada and studied at the University of Toronto.
