It extends from a junction with VT 102 and VT 114 to the Canadian border, where it continues into Quebec as Route 253. VT 253 is known in Canaan as Christian Hill Road. Route description VT 253 begins at an intersection with VT 114 (Gale Street) and VT 102 in the town of Canaan near the New Hampshire state line. Canaan is a town in Essex County, Vermont, United States. The population was 896 at the 2020 census. Canaan contains the village of Beecher Falls, located at the confluence of the Connecticut River and Halls Stream. It is part of the Berlin, NH–VT Micropolitan Statistical Area. Due to Québécois ancestry, 26% of Canaan residents speak French as their primary language, making the town one of New England's "Little Canadas." This is a decrease from 1982, when nearly 44% spoke French as their native language. Colebrook is a census-designated place (CDP) and the main village in the town of Colebrook, Coös County, New Hampshire, United States. The population of the CDP was 1,201 at the 2020 census, out of 2,084 in the entire town. The CDP population had dropped from 1,394 at the 2010 census. West Stewartstown is a census-designated place in the town of Stewartstown in Coös County, New Hampshire, United States. It had a population of 263 at the 2020 census, down from 386 at the 2010 census. Geography It is located along U.S. Route 3 and the Connecticut River in the northwestern corner of Stewartstown, directly across the river from Canaan, Vermont, and one mile south of the Canada–US border. Beecher Falls–East Hereford Border Crossing
The Beecher Falls–East Hereford Border Crossing connects the towns of East Hereford, Quebec, (formerly Comins Mills) and the village of Beecher Falls, Vermont, on the Canada–United States border. It is reached by Vermont Route 253 on the American side and by Quebec Route 253 on the Canadian side. Both the Canadian and the U.S. stations are open 24 hours a day. Whilst the Canadian station is open for commercial traffic, this is only on a more limited basis. East Hereford is a municipality of about 260 people in southeastern Quebec, Canada, in Coaticook Regional County Municipality in the Estrie region. East Hereford is located just north of Beecher Falls, Vermont, and on the east side of East Hereford it is bordered by New Hampshire.
