Verbindungsbahn (Vienna)
The Verbindungsbahn (), also known as the Stammstrecke (), is a railway line in Vienna, Austria. It runs across Vienna, roughly east–west, connecting with most major railway lines in the vicinity of Wien Hauptbahnhof. The section between and , along with part of the North railway line, hosts most Vienna S-Bahn services. Route The western end of the Verbindungsbahn is at , where it connects with the Western Railway and Suburban line. It runs to the south to connect with the Southern Railway and . Between and Wien Hauptbahnhof, the line runs parallel to the Southern Railway. It enters the -long Schnellbahntunnel west of Wien Hauptbahnhof; the platforms for that station and are underground. After a section above ground, it enters another tunnel, where it connects with the . Both and are located in tunnels. The Vienna S-Bahn is a suburban commuter rail network in Vienna, Austria. As opposed to the city-run urban metro network, the Vienna U-Bahn, it extends beyond the borders of the city, is operated by the ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways), and consists of many branch lines. The Southern Railway (german: Südbahn) is a railway in Austria that runs from Vienna to Graz and the border with Slovenia at Spielfeld via Semmering and Bruck an der Mur. The Donaukanal ("Danube Canal") is a former arm of the river Danube, now regulated as a water channel (since 1598), within the city of Vienna, Austria.
