Venezuelan Winter League
The Venezuelan Professional Baseball League or Liga Venezolana de Béisbol Profesional (LVBP) is the professional baseball league in Venezuela. The league's champion takes part in the Caribbean Series each year. History Early years Baseball exploded in Venezuela in 1941, following the world championship in Havana. By then, the appearance of professional baseball in Venezuela attracted many ball players from the Caribbean and the United States to the country, showing a more integrated sport there than it was in the United States. This is evidenced in the hiring of stellar players like Ramón Bragaña, Martín Dihigo, Oscar Estrada, Cocaina Garcia, Bertrum Hunter, Roy Campanella, Sam Jethroe, Satchel Paige, and Roy Welmaker. Baseball
Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of nine players each, taking turns batting and fielding. The game occurs over the course of several plays, with each play generally beginning when a player on the fielding team, called the pitcher, throws a ball that a player on the batting team, called the batter, tries to hit with a bat. The objective of the offensive team (batting team) is to hit the ball into the field of play, away from the other team's players, allowing its players to run the bases, having them advance counter-clockwise around four bases to score what are called " runs". Roy Welmaker
Roy Horace Welmaker (December 6, 1913 – February 3, 1998), nicknamed "Snookie", was an American professional baseball pitcher in the Negro leagues. He played from 1932 to 1953. A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Welmaker served in the US Army during World War II. Welmaker was the opening pitcher for the 1942 Negro World Series. He lost his first start to Jack Matchett of the Kansas City Monarchs, as a late inning rally meant a 8-0 loss. He would return to start Game 1 and Game 5 of the 1944 Negro World Series, winning both times against the Birmingham Black Barons and pitchers Johnny Markham and Alfred Saylor. In the 1945 Negro World Series, he was the starting pitcher for Game 1 against Bill Jefferson, but he allowed the go-ahead run to score in the eighth while allowing just six hits and two runs. Industriales De Valencia
The Industriales de Valencia was a baseball club who played from 1955 through 1968 in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League. The Industriales joined the league as a replacement for the Santa Marta BBC. The Industriales were based at Valencia, the capital city of Carabobo state, and played their home games at Estadio Cuatricentenario. The Valencia club won five season titles, four championships and three sub-championships in its 13-season history, representing Venezuela in the first stage of the Caribbean Series in the 1956 and 1958 tournaments. Despite their successful performance at the league, the Industriales folded in 1968 due to low attendance numbers. They relocated to Portuguesa state for the 1968–1969 season, and were renamed Llaneros de Acarigua. Santa Marta (baseball Club)
The Samanes del Santa Marta BBC were a baseball team that played in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League during the 1954–1955 season. The team represented the city of La Guaira, Vargas, Venezuela, and played its home games at Estadio Universitario de Caracas. Santa Marta was managed by former big leaguer Red Kress and entered the league as a replacement for the departed Sabios de Vargas, being part of a four-team league that included the Leones del Caracas, Navegantes del Magallanes and Patriotas de Venezuela. The team was clearly overmatched, finishing in last place with an 18-33 record, 14½ games out of first place. Santa Marta never reached a high level of popularity, failing to encourage a significant fan support, and folded after its first season. Daniel Canónico (February 3, 1916 – August 20, 1975) was a Venezuelan baseball right handed pitcher.
