Comarques Of The Valencian Community
The ''comarques'' of the Valencian Community, form an intermediate level of administrative subdivision between municipalities and provinces. They are used as a basis for the provision of local services by the Generalitat Valenciana, but do not have any representative or executive bodies of their own. In 1987, the Generalitat Valenciana published an official proposal for Homologated Territorial Demarcations, ''Demarcacions Territorials Homologades'' (DTH), of three degrees, where the first degree largely coincides with the territorial concept of ''comarca''. Until now, the practice of these demarcations has been limited as a reference to the administrative decentralisation of the different services offered by the Generalitat, such as education, health, or agriculture. San Miguel De Salinas
San Miguel de Salinas (; ca, label=Valencian, Sant Miquel de les Salines ) is a town and municipality in the Valencian Community (Spain), situated in the south of the province of Alicante; in the comarca of Vega Baja del Segura. In the 2006 census, the population was 7,104. Location and Geography Located between Torrevieja and Murcia, San Miguel de Salinas is the highest town in the comarca. Its area (54 km²) descends from the mountain with many streams and gullies leading to the plain, known as ''El Llano'', where the salt lakes are found. Local roads connect the town with Orihuela, Bigastro, Torrevieja and other towns in the area. Bigastro
Bigastro () is a municipality in the Valencian Community (Spain) situated in the south of the province of Alicante, in the comarca of Vega Baja del Segura. It had a population of 6,450 at the time of the 2005 census. History In La Loma there is an archaeological site dating from the Bronze Age. The district derives its name from the ''Lugar Nuevo de los Canónigos'', a place of residence for the canons of Orihuela cathedral, which once had power over the area. In 1701, after some lawsuits with the settlers, the church made some allowances which permitted the foundation of Bigastro, starting with three estates, in which 24 families lived. Economy At the time of its foundation, agriculture was concentrated around flax and hemp; in the 19th century, the fall of the textile sector sparked interest in citrus fruits and products from irrigated fields.
