Vasanthabalan
Vasanthabalan (sometimes credited as Vasantha Balan) is an Indian Tamil film director and screenwriter, known for his Tragedy Films in Tamil Cinema. He has made critically acclaimed films including ''Veyil'' (2006), ''Angadi Theru'' (2010) and '' Kaaviya Thalaivan'' (2014). Career Vasanthabalan began his film career as an editing assistant and later became an assistant director to S.Shankar in the latter's directorial debut, ''Gentleman'' (1993). He continued to work under Shankar in three more films'' Kaadhalan'' (1994), ''Indian'' (1996) and ''Jeans'' (1998)and first attempted to make a film titled ''Aathi'' with Rajasekar in the lead role, but the project was stalled. He later made his break as an independent director with the box-office failure ''Album'' (2002). His second film, produced by Shankar's S Pictures, ''Veyil'' (2006) was both critically acclaimed and commercially successful. ''Kaaviya Thalaivan'' () is a 2014 Indian Tamil language, Tamil-language historical drama film written and directed by Vasanthabalan and produced by S. Sashikanth and Varun Manian under their production companies YNOT Studios and Radiance Media Group. It stars Siddharth (actor), Siddharth, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Prithviraj, Vedhika and Anaika Soti while Nassar (actor), Nassar, Thambi Ramaiah, Ponvannan, Mansoor Ali Khan (actor), Mansoor Ali Khan and others appear in supporting roles. Aravaan
''Aravaan'' () is a 2012 Indian Tamil language epic historical film directed by Vasanthabalan, based on Su. Venkatesan's novel ''Kaaval Kottam''. It was released in 2012 and stars Aadhi, Dhansika, Archana Kavi and Pasupathy. Kabir Bedi has a prominent role and Bharath is also featured in a cameo role. The film marks noted playback singer Karthik's debut as a music director. ''Aravaan'' was released on 2 March 2012 to mixed reviews and had moderate earnings at the box office. Plot The film is set in the 18th century and is about a group of people who steal from the wealthy to provide food and shelter for their tribe. Komboodhi (Pasupathy) is the leader of the gang and always succeeds and keeps his villagers meagerly fed. ''Album'' is a 2002 Indian Tamil-language romantic drama film written and directed by Vasanthabalan making his directorial debut, starring newcomer Rajesh and Shrutika. The story portrays the love and affection between two families. The film, produced by Kavithalayaa Productions, was Vasanthabalan's directorial debut and became an average success. It is however best known for featuring the popular chartbuster track "Chellame Chellam" from Karthik Raja's soundtrack to the film, which was award-winning playback singer Shreya Ghoshal's first song in Tamil language. The plot revolves around Jeeva and Viji's family who are neighbours to each other. Viji falls in love with Jeeva and they both start loving each other. The Filmfare Best Director Award is given by the ''Filmfare'' magazine as part of its annual Filmfare Awards South for Tamil (Kollywood) films. The awards were extended to "Best Director" in 1972. ''Veyil'' ( en, Sunshine, italics=yes or ''Sun Blaze'') is a 2006 Indian Tamil-language drama film written and directed by Vasanthabalan. Bharath and Pasupathy are the male leads whereas Bhavana, Priyanka and Sriya Reddy plays the female leads. Upon release, the movie met with highly positive reviews and was commercially successful.
