Sárvár
Sárvár (german: Kotenburg or ; la, Bassiana; sl, Mala Sela) is a town in Vas County, Hungary. Sárvár lies on the banks of the River Rába at Kemeneshát. The population is nearly 16,000. The town has become a tourist centre of international renown. Etymology ''Sár'' means "mud" in Hungarian, and ''vár'' means "castle". The latter is a common ending for settlement names. History During the World War II, Sárvár was used as a centre for the internment for Polish soldiers who had arrived in Hungary in 1939. Later, during the World War II, Sárvár was used as a concentration camp for the internment for thousands of Serb families expelled by Hungarian soldiers from their homes in northern Serbia in 1941. Now, there is a monument and graveyard for hundreds of Serbs who died in Sárvár concentration camp. Veszprém
Veszprém (; german: Weißbrunn, sl, Belomost) is one of the oldest urban areas in Hungary, and a city with county rights. It lies approximately north of the Lake Balaton. It is the administrative center of the county (comitatus or 'megye') of the same name. Etymology The name of the city originates from a Slavic personal name ''Bezprem'' or ''Bezprym'' (Proto-Slavic ''Bezprěmъ'') meaning "stubborn", "self-confident, not willing to retreat". Őriszentpéter ( sl, Šentpeter) is a town in Vas County, Hungary. Geography The town extends on the hills of the region Őrség, where the river Zala flows through. Zala has its source about away at Szalafő. The town has an ancient szer structure. Vasvár (, , Latin: (formerly) ), is a town in Vas County, Hungary. History While the Ottomans occupied most of central Europe, the region north of lake Balaton remained in the Kingdom of Hungary (1538–1867) (captaincy between Balaton and Drava). Körmend ( sl, Kermendin, Prekmurje Slovene: ''Karmadén,'' ger, Kirment) is a town in Vas county , Western Hungary. Places of interest The town is especially well known for its castle which used to belong to the Batthyány family, one of the most important aristocrat families of Hungary. Blessed Ladislaus Batthyány-Strattmann (1870–1931), a famous ophthalmologist who was beatified by the Catholic Church, lived in the castle with his family for nearly 10 years. Szentgotthárd
Szentgotthárd ( sl, Monošter; german: St. Gotthard) is the westernmost town of Hungary. It is situated on the Rába River near the Austrian border. History The town took its name from, and grew up round, the Cistercian Szentgotthárd Abbey, founded here in 1183. In 1664, it was the site of the Battle of Saint Gotthard, where an Austrian army led by Raimondo Montecuccoli defeated the Ottoman Empire so that the Turks had to agree to the Peace of Vasvár, which held until 1683. A second Battle of Saint Gotthard in 1705 was a victory for Rákóczi's anti-Habsburg Hungarian rebels. Celldömölk
Celldömölk (german: Kleinmariazell) is the fifth largest town in Vas County, Hungary. Parts of the Eragon movie were filmed here. The town with 11,000 inhabitants can be found in the centre of Kemenesalja Hills. History Celldömölk has a history older than 750 years. On the western boundaries of the town, there are the remains of the abbey built in the 12th century in Roman style. Before World War II, there was a large Jewish community. Most of the Jews in the community were deported by the Hungarian Nyilaskeresztes Párt as part of the Hungarian cleansing during The Holocaust. Bük
Bük is a town in Vas County, Hungary, close to the Austrian border. Nowadays it has a reputation for being a popular holiday destination in Hungary and one of the major spa and wellness spots in Central Europe. Location The town is situated 27 kilometers from Szombathely at the Répce-river plains. History The village is first mentioned in charters in 1271 with the name: ''Byk''. The church was built in the 12th century, so the village is even older. In 1461 the name of the village is ''Poss. Vinchefalwa Byk''. Csepreg
Csepreg (German: ''Schapring; Croatian: Čepreg'') is a town in Vas County, Hungary. It is the largest town on the Répce River. The current mayor of the town is Zoltán Horváth, elected on November 13, 2019.
