Varsity Victory Volunteers
The Varsity Victory Volunteers ( ja, 大学勝利奉仕団, ''Daigaku Shōri Hōshidan'') was a civilian sapper unit composed of Japanese-Americans from Hawaii. The VVV was a major stepping stone in the creation of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, which would end up becoming the most decorated regiment in United States armed forces history. History On the day of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States announced that all Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) students were to report for military duty, forming the Hawaii Territorial Guard (HTG). These ROTC students were given a rifle with only five bullets and ordered to guard vital installations such as bridges, wells, reservoirs, pumping stations, water tanks, and high schools. Bumpei Akaji
Bumpei Akaji (1921–2002) was an American sculptor from Hawaii. He was known for welding large copper and brass sculptures which can be seen all over Hawaii as part of Hawaii's Art in Public Places program. Biography Akaji was born in Lawai, Hawaii, Lawai, on the Hawaiian island of Kauai in 1921. In 1943 he joined the United States Army and was sent to Italy with the 100th Infantry Battalion (United States), 100th Battalion of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (United States), 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Hung Wai Ching
Hung Wai Ching (August 1, 1905 February 9, 2002) was a Chinese American businessman. He founded the Varsity Victory Volunteers, and was one of the founders of Aloha Airlines. Early life and education Ching was born in Honolulu on August 1, 1905. His parents were immigrants from China. He attended McKinley High School and graduated in 1924. He graduated from the University of Hawaii in 1928, then attended Union Theological Seminary. In 1932 he earned a master's degree from Yale Divinity School. He also worked at the Nuuanu YMCA from 1928 to 1938, then as served as secretary at the Atherton YMCA near the University of Hawaii. Career During World War II Ching was invited to be part of the Council for Interracial Unity's Morale Division with Shigeo Yoshida and Charles Loomis. Hawaii Air Depot Volunteer Corp
The Hawaii Air Depot Volunteer Corps (HADVC) was a civilian Paramilitary unit at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii during World War II. The HADVC took on a wide variety of roles helping in the routine operations of the airfield. Along with the Businessmen's Military Training Corps (BMTC), Hawaii Defense Volunteers, Women's Army Volunteer Corps (WAVC), 1st Oahu Volunteer Infantry, and 2nd Oahu Volunteer Infantry, they formed the Organized Defense Volunteer Regiments. Businessmen's Military Training Corps
The Businessmen's Military Training Corps was a white and part-Hawaiian militia unit to prevent collaboration of Japanese-Americans as a result of a Japanese invasion of Hawaii. The militia was made up of 17 companies, two thirds of which were World War I veterans. Their main activates were patrolling, security, and battle planning. 442nd Regimental Combat Team
The 442nd Infantry Regiment ( ja, 第442歩兵連隊) was an infantry regiment of the United States Army. The regiment is best known as the most decorated in U.S. military history and as a fighting unit composed almost entirely of second-generation American soldiers of Japanese ancestry ('' Nisei'') who fought in World War II. Beginning in 1944, the regiment fought primarily in the European Theatre, in particular Italy, southern France, and Germany. The 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT) was organized on March 23, 1943, in response to the War Department's call for volunteers to form the segregated Japanese American army combat unit.
