Vardø Lighthouse
Vardø Lighthouse ( no, Vardø fyr) is a coastal lighthouse located on the island of Hornøya, just off the coast of the town of Vardø in Vardø Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It is the easternmost lighthouse in Norway. Description Vardø Lighthouse was established in 1896 and automated in 1991. The lighthouse was listed as a protected site in 1998. The tall white, square pyramidal, wooden tower has a red, metal, cylindrical light room on top. The light emits a white flash every 30 seconds. The 1,809,000 candela light can be seen for up to . The light is emitted at an altitude of above sea level. The light burns from 12 August until 24 April each year, but it is off during the summers due to the midnight sun. The site is located on a rocky island, just off the Vardø harbor. It is only accessible by boat, and it is closed to the public. Hornøya (Finnmark)
Hornøya is a small, , uninhabited island in Vardø Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It lies in the Barents Sea, just east of the larger island of Vardøya where the town of Vardø is located. Vardø Lighthouse is situated at the highest point of the island, at an elevation of above sea level, and it protects the shipping lanes around the town of Vardø. The island is the easternmost point of Norway proper. Candela
The candela ( or ; symbol: cd) is the unit of luminous intensity in the International System of Units (SI). It measures luminous power per unit solid angle emitted by a light source in a particular direction. The town is located on the island of Vardøya in the Barents Sea, just off the coast of the large Varanger Peninsula. The town has a population (2017) of 1,875 which gives the town a population density of . Vardø is the easternmost town in Norway (and in all the Nordic countries), located at 31°E, which is east of Saint Petersburg, Kyiv, and Istanbul. The eastern part of Finnmark is in the same time zone as the rest of the country, but it is more than an hour at odds with daylight hours. Midnight Sun
The midnight sun is a natural phenomenon that occurs in the summer months in places north of the Arctic Circle or south of the Antarctic Circle, when the Sun remains visible at the local midnight. When the midnight sun is seen in the Arctic, the Sun appears to move from left to right, but in Antarctica the equivalent apparent motion is from right to left. Lighthouses In Norway
The coast of Norway is 100,915 km long and there have been a total of 212 lighthouses along it, but no more than 154 have ever been operational at the same time. The first, Lindesnes Lighthouse, opened in 1655; the newest Lighthouse, Anda, was finished in 1932. The first Lighthouses were private operations, but in 1821 the government made the Channel and Harbor Inspector responsible for Lighthouses in Norway. A dedicated Lighthouse Administration was set up in 1841. The Lighthouses are today mostly automated and since 1974, run by the Norwegian Coastal Administration. Two lightvessels had been operated along the Norwegian coast. "Enigheden" off Ålesund from 1856 vas replaced with Lepsøyrev Lighthouse in 1879, and "Ildjernsflu" moored off Nesodden from 1914 until it was scrapped in 1968.
