Vamos
Vamos (Greek: Βάμος) is a small town and former municipality in the Chania regional unit, Crete, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform "Kallikratis" it is a municipal unit, part of the municipality of Apokoronas, serving as its historical capital. It is situated on a small hill at an altitude of above sea level, about from Chania. In Vamos, one can find several restaurants, snack bars and shops in the village, as well as many public services, such as a fully equipped health center, schools, police station and the regional court for the regions of Apokoronas and Sfakia. The village is said to have been founded by Arab invaders during the 8th century, which sought refuge in Crete after being expelled from Andalusia. The first official record of the name (Vamo/Vamu) is found on a map of 1577 made by Francesco Barozzi, and according to the Venetian census of 1583 it had 271 inhabitants. Kefalas
Kefalas ( el, Κεφαλάς) is a village and a community on the island of Crete, Greece, 282m above sea level. It is in the Vamos municipal unit in the Apokoronas municipality. The community consists of the villages Kefalas, Drapanos and Palailoni. Overview Kefalas owes its name to the first residents there, called the Kephalades, the leaders of the Byzantine settlers sent to Crete in 1182. It is about five minutes by car from the village of Vamos itself and about 10 minutes to Almyrida beach on the northwest coast of the island. The village is on the northeast edge of the Drapanos peninsula, built facing the sea. Eight churches can be found here. (Local residents talk of up to 25 churches in total, many of which are hidden in private gardens.) There are views from Kefalas to the Bay of Georgioupolis and the Cretan White Mountains. Sellia, Chania
Sellia ( el, Σελλία) is a small village in Crete, Greece, in the municipal unit of Vamos, in the regional unit of Chania. The village is located in between the towns of Vamos and Georgioupoli on the Drapano Peninsula, close to the north coast of the island, in the Apokoronas region. It has a winter population of 50 and a summer population of about 150. It is divided into Upper and Lower Selia. It is a very small, quiet rural village with many older homes and plenty of traditional Cretan charm plus views of the Cretan White Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. Chania ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Χανίων) is one of the four regional units of Greece, regional units of Crete; it covers the westernmost quarter of the island. Its capital is the city of Chania. Apokoronas
Apokoronas ( el, Αποκόρωνας) is a municipality and a former province (επαρχία) in the Chania regional unit, north-west Crete, Greece. It is situated on the north coast of Crete, to the east of Chania itself. The seat of the municipality is the village Vryses. The municipality has an area of . Geography Apokoronas extends from the foothills of the White Mountains north to the coast, in a wide plain with rolling hills. To the east, Cape Drapanon rises above the plain and extends out into the Sea of Crete. The area is very green and fertile, unusual for rocky Crete. The Kiliaris river, known in antiquity as 'Pyknos', runs through the region. Georgioupoli
Georgioupoli ( el, Γεωργιούπολη) is a resort village and former municipality in the Chania regional unit, Crete, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Apokoronas, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of . It is located east of Chania, about west of Rethymno and about west of Heraklio. It was named after Prince George of Greece, high commissioner of the island in the last years of Ottoman occupation. Geography Georgioupolis is found at the apex of Almiros Bay on the Sea of Crete, with Cape Drapano and its rocky coast to the north and the long sandy beaches towards Rethimno in the east, just away. Gavalochori
Gavalochori ( el, Γαβαλοχώρι) is a village of the Chania regional unit on the northwest coast of the island of Crete, in Greece. It is located on Cape Drapan in the Vamos municipality of the Apokoronas region. It is named after the Gavalas family who lived here during the reign of the Venetians. Gavalochori is four kilometers from the coast at Almirida. It is a very old village with an interesting history explained in the local Folklore Museum. The population is around 350 but this number swells in the summer months as tourists, relatives and visitors arrive. Xirosterni
Xirosterni ( el, Ξηροστέρνι) is a village and a community located in the Apokoronas region close to the northwest coast of the island of Crete, Greece, in Chania regional unit. The community consists of the settlements Xirosterni and Litsarda. It is approximately from Chania. Overview It is a small, traditional village located between Kefalas and Vamos. The village mainly consists of old traditional homes with views of the Cretan White Mountains or the sea. There are no hotels, rental rooms or restaurants here - it is strictly residential. There is however a small café which sometimes serves snacks. The village's previous name was "Viola", which is a Cretan flower. The new name Xirosterni means "dry cistern", or "dry well". Fres ( el, Φρες) is a village and former municipality in the Chania regional unit, Crete, Greece.
