Valles Mines is an unincorporated community in southern Jefferson County, Missouri, United States. It is located approximately seven miles south of De Soto. It is located on Missouri Route V less than one mile west of U.S. Route 67. Joachim Creek flows past the north side of the community. The ZIP Code for Valles Mines is 63087. A post office called Valles Mines was established in 1826. The community is named after François Vallé, who established lead mines there in the 18th century. Jefferson County, Missouri
Jefferson County is located in the eastern portion of the state of Missouri. It is a part of the St. Louis Metropolitan Area. As of the 2020 census, the population was 226,739, making it the sixth-most populous county in Missouri. Its county seat is Hillsboro. The county was organized in 1818 and named in honor of former president Thomas Jefferson. De Soto, Missouri
De Soto is a city in Jefferson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 6,449 at the 2020 census and the city is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The Van Metre family were first to settle in 1803. The town was organized in 1857 and is named for the explorer Hernando De Soto, who claimed the Louisiana Territory for Spain. De Soto was the city closest to the mean center of U.S. population in 1980. The city celebrated its Bicentennial in 2003. The city made national news on and after May 6, 2003, when straight-line winds and a tornado struck. Joachim Creek
Joachim Creek is a stream in Jefferson and St. Francois counties in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is a tributary to the Mississippi River. The stream headwaters arise in northern St. Francois County southeast of Halifax and it flows north roughly parallel to and east of US Route 67. The stream enters Jefferson County and just northeast of Valles Mines the stream turns to the northwest and passes under Route 67. The stream turns north and passes through De Soto and continues northeast past Victoria and Hematite. West of Festus the stream meanders north and northwest past Silica and Ludwigs. François Vallé
François Vallé (1716–1783) son of Charles Vallée and Geneviève Marcou, was a French Canadian who immigrated to Upper Louisiana of Beauport, Quebec City sometime in the early 1740s. Beginning as a laborer of no means, he engaged in agriculture, lead mining, and trade with Indians. Upon his death, he was the wealthiest man in Upper Louisiana.
