Valentín Barrios
Valentín Barrios González (born 7 April 1942) is a Spanish professional golfer. He won the 1971 Madrid Open, the 1972 Algarve Open and was one of the winning pair in the 1972 Marlboro Nations' Cup. He represented Spain three times in the World Cup. Golf career Barrios was runner-up in the 1963 Open de España but he was at his best during the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was runner-up in the 1970 Italian BP Open and the 1970 German Open and won the 1971 Madrid Open and the 1972 Algarve Open. Representing Spain, he partnered with Ángel Gallardo and won the 1972 Marlboro Nations' Cup, beating the Welsh pair of Brian Huggett and David Vaughan in the final. He also won the 1973 Lancia D'Oro invitation tournament at Biella Golf Club near Magnano, Italy. Barrios played on the European Tour in the 1970s. Italian Open (golf)
The DS Automobiles Italian Open ( it, Open d'Italia) is the men's national open golf championship of Italy. It was founded in 1925 and, except for 1933 and during World War II, was played annually until 1960. After an eleven-year hiatus, it returned in 1971 when it was one of five tournaments in Continental Europe that were included on the British PGA Order of Merit circuit. The following year of that circuit has since been recognised as the first official season of the European Tour, and the Italian Open is one of few tournaments that have featured on the schedule every year. Hennessy Cognac Cup
The Hennessy Cognac Cup was a biennial team golf tournament contested from 1976 to 1984. The contests in 1976, 1978 and 1980 were between teams of professional male golfers; one team representing Great Britain and Ireland, the other team representing Continental Europe. There was also an earlier event, in 1974, played at Sotogrande in Spain, not sponsored by Hennessy. In 1982 a third team, the Rest of the World, was added and the event became a stroke-play contest with an individual prize. The 1984 event was run on a different basis, with 10 national teams competing. The tournament was played in years when there was no Ryder Cup. The first matches between a team representing Great Britain and Ireland and a team representing Continental Europe were played for the Joy Cup from 1954 to 1958. Double Diamond International
The Double Diamond International was a team golf tournament that was played from 1971 to 1977. It was hosted in England for the first three years, and then in Scotland. From 1974 and 1977 the event was preceded by an individual 36-hole stroke play tournament that was included on the British PGA tournament circuit; the circuit would later become officially recognised as the European Tour. The 1973 World Cup took place 22–25 November at the Club de Golf Nueva Andalucía in Marbella, Spain. The name of the club was later changed to Real Club de Golf Las Brisas. The 1972 World Cup took place 9–12 November at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia. It was the 20th World Cup event. The tournament was a stroke play team event, shortened from 72 holes, after the second round, scheduled on Friday, was cancelled due to bad weather, to 54 holes with 43 teams. Each team consisted of two players from a country. The combined score of each team determined the team results. The Republic of China team of Hsieh Min-Nan and Lu Liang-Huan won by two strokes over the Japan team of Takaaki Kono and Takashi Murakami. The individual competition was won by Hsieh two strokes ahead of Kono. 1966 Canada Cup
The 1966 Canada Cup took place 11–14 November at the Tokyo Yomiuri Country Club in Inagi, Tokyo, Japan. It was the 14th Canada Cup event, which became the World Cup in 1967. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with 36 teams. These were the same teams that had competed in 1965 with the addition of South Korea and Thailand, but without Egypt, Monaco and Morocco. Each team consisted of two players from a country. The combined score of each team determined the team results. The American team of Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer won by five strokes over the South African team of Harold Henning and Gary Player. The Open Championship
The Open Championship, often referred to as The Open or the British Open, is the oldest golf tournament in the world, and one of the most prestigious. Founded in 1860, it was originally held annually at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland. Later the venue rotated between a select group of coastal links golf courses in the United Kingdom. It is organised by the R&A. The Open is one of the four men's major golf tournaments, the others being the Masters Tournament, the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open. Manuel Piñero
Manuel Piñero Sánchez (born 1 September 1952) is a Spanish professional golfer. Piñero was born in Badajoz. He turned professional in 1968 and established himself on the European Tour in the early 1970s. He won nine titles on the Tour, the most prestigious of them the 1977 British PGA Championship. He featured in the top ten on the European Tour Order of Merit five times, including back to back fourth places in 1976 and 1977. Piñero was with Bing Crosby when Crosby died. On 14 October 1977, Piñero teamed up with Crosby in a recreational match against fellow Spanish pro Valentín Barrios and his amateur partner Cesar de Zulueta, owner of Moraleja Golf Course, where the match was played.
