Valdemaras Martinkėnas
Valdemaras Martinkėnas (10 March 1965 – 20 July 2004) was a Soviet and Lithuanian professional footballer and coach. Career Born in Alytus, Martinkėnas was the goalkeeper for the Lithuanian national team in the years after independence from the USSR, appearing in most of the qualifying games for the 1994 World Cup. He won 19 caps for his country. He also won the Lithuanian league championship with Zalgiris Vilnius in 1991, and starred in Dynamo Kyiv's 1992–93 Ukrainian league championship win. Later, he became goalkeeping coach to the Estonian national side. Martinkėnas died at the age of 39 in Nova Gorica in Slovenia, drowning in a strong current after having gone for a swim in a mountain river. He was the goalkeeping coach of Flora Tallinn at the time, and was in Slovenia preparing for their Champions League qualifier against NK Gorica. Alytus
Alytus is a city with municipal rights in southern Lithuania. It is the capital of Alytus County. Its population in 2022 was 53,925. Alytus is the historical centre of the Dzūkija region. The city lies on the banks of the Nemunas River. The major roads linking Vilnius, Kaunas, Lazdijai (border with Poland), and Hrodna in Belarus pass through Alytus. Divided onto two separate entities for centuries, it consists of two parts still frequently referred to as ''Alytus I'' and ''Alytus II'', the earlier being a smaller town and the latter forming the city centre with parks, microdistricts and industrial areas. 1992–93 Vyshcha Liha
The 1992–93 Vyshcha Liha season was the second since its establishment. Tavriya Simferopol were the defending champions, having won their 1st national league title in history. A total of sixteen teams participated in the competition, fourteen of them contested the 1992 season while the remaining two were promoted from the Ukrainian First League. The competition began on August 15, 1992, with four games finishing on June 20, 1993. The competition was suspended for the winter break on November 22, 1992, and resumed on March 14, 1993. On June 20, 1993 Dynamo Kyiv earned their first Ukrainian title with a 4–1 away victory over Kremin Kremenchuk.
