VS-35 (1986–1988)
Air Anti-Submarine Squadron 35 known as the Boomerangs was reestablished in 1986 as the Anti-Submarine Warfare squadron of CVW-10 which was also created that same year. During its short active service, it flew the Lockheed S-3A Viking before CVW-10 along with it were disestablished in 1988. History VS-35 was reestablished as a pre-establishment detachment on 10 September 1986. During this time, VS-35 was soon assigned to CVW-10 and given the tail code ''"NM"''. VS-35 was originally supposed to deploy with USS Independence in 1986 but did this not happen. Between 24 July 1987, to 5 August 1987, VS-35 deployed onboard USS Enterprise along the west coast. After this deployment, it was still planned that CVW-10 would deploy with Independence, but by the time Independence completed her SLEP-life upgrade, VS-35 was decommissioned on 1 June 1988. Anti-Submarine Warfare
Anti-submarine warfare (ASW, or in older form A/S) is a branch of underwater warfare that uses surface warships, aircraft, submarines, or other platforms, to find, track, and deter, damage, or destroy enemy submarines. Such operations are typically carried out to protect friendly shipping and coastal facilities from submarine attacks and to overcome blockades. Successful ASW operations typically involved a combination of sensor and weapon technologies, along with effective deployment strategies and sufficiently trained personnel. The Lockheed S-3 Viking is a four-crew, twin-engine turbofan-powered jet aircraft designed and produced by the American aerospace manufacturer Lockheed Corporation. Because of its characteristic sound, it was nicknamed the "War Hoover" after the vacuum cleaner brand. Carrier Air Wing Ten
Carrier Air Wing Ten (CVW-10) were two separate carrier air wings of the United States Navy that existed during the Cold War. The first CVW-10 was originally known as CVG-10 and was established in 1950 before being disestablished in November 1969. The second and much shorter lived one was established in 1986 but due to budgets after one workups cruise, it was disestablished in 1988 along with all of its squadrons. USS Independence (CV-62)
The fifth USS ''Independence'' (CV/CVA-62) was an aircraft carrier of the United States Navy. She was the fourth and final member of the of conventionally powered supercarriers. She entered service in 1959, with much of her early years spent in the Mediterranean Fleet. ''Independence'' was decommissioned in 1998 after 39 years of active service. Stored in recent years at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Washington, the ex-''Independence'' was towed beginning on 10 March 2017 to Brownsville, Texas for scrapping. Sea Control Squadron 35 (VS-35), known as the ''Boomerangers'' was an anti-submarine/surface squadron of the United States Navy. Established on 3 January 1961, at Naval Air Station Los Alamitos, California, it was disestablished on 30 June 1973. History On establishment the squadron was equipped with eleven S2F-1 Tracker aircraft. In July 1961, the squadron transition to the S2F-3, which would later be designated the S-2D.
