VIA ( Russian: ''ВИА'') is an abbreviation for Vocal- usicInstrumental-Ensemble (russian: Вокально-инструментальный ансамбль, ''Vokalno-instrumentalny ansambl''). It is the general name used for pop and rock bands that were formally recognized by the Soviet government from the 1960s to the 1980s. In Soviet times, the term ''VIA'' generally meant ''band'', but it is now used in Russia to refer specifically to pop, rock, and folk groups active during the Soviet period. In the PRL and some other neighbouring satellite states of the USSR the term big-beat was used instead. History The term VIA appeared in the Soviet Union in the 1960s and represented a model under which the Soviet government was willing to permit domestic rock and pop music acts to develop. Tsvety (russian: link=no, Цветы, lit=The Flowers) is a Soviet and Russian rock band that, according to ''Itogi'' magazine, "started all Russian alternative culture". It was one of the first bands to introduce rock music to the Soviet show business. The Flowers were established in 1969 by guitar player and songwriter Stas Namin. In 1973 The Flowers released flexis with producing company Melodiya; overall seven million copies were sold. After becoming a major hit in the USSR, in 1974 the band went on its first professional tour; but in 1975 the band dissolved as a result of a conflict with the Philharmonic Society, and it was liquidated by a decree of the Ministry of Culture of the USSR, its name was banned. It was only in 1977 that the band was resurrected under the new name ''The Stas Namin Group'', in 1978 it went on tour still being banned by all central mass media outlets. Lev Valerianovich Leshchenko (russian: link=no, Лев Валерьянович Лещенко; born 1 February 1942), is a Russian singer, who is best known for his rendition of "Den Pobedy" and the 1980 Summer Olympics closing ceremony theme song " Do svidanja, Moskva". Biography Lev Leshchenko was born on 1 February 1942 in Moscow, Soviet Union. His father, Valerian Andreyevich Leshchenko (1904–2004), was a Red Army officer who was at war outside of Moscow. His grandfather was from the village of Nizy in the Kharkov province, which at that time was part of the Russian Empire. Aerobus is a self-propelled electrically powered bus-like vehicle riding on a suspended overhead cable. The cable arrangement, similar to a suspension bridge, allows for long spans of up to 600 metres between pylons.
