Vítor Gonçalves (footballer, Born 1896)
Vítor Cândido Gonçalves (12 April 1896 – 1965) was a Portuguese footballer who played as a midfielder. A Portuguese international, he both played for and managed S.L. Benfica. Career A forward in his early career, Gonçalves established himself as a midfielder soon after, playing alongside Cândido de Oliveira and António Ribeiro dos Reis. A Casa Pia student like many other Benfica players at the time, he gained more recognition after Cândido de Oliveira left the club in 1920 to start a new one, Casa Pia A.C. Gonçalves first represented Portugal on 18 December 1921, in Madrid, against Spain, in a 3–1 loss, and then again in Lisbon, against the same opponent, in a 2–1 loss. In the latter match, he led the captain armband. He coached Benfica from 1934 to 1936, winning the Campeonato de Portugal in his first season and the championship in the second one. General Vasco dos Santos Gonçalves OA (; Lisbon 3 May 1921 – 11 June 2005) was a Portuguese army officer in the Engineering Corps who took part in the Carnation Revolution and later served as the 104th Prime Minister from 18 July 1974 to 19 September 1975. Early life Vasco dos Santos Gonçalves was born on 3 May 1921, in Sintra, Portugal. His father, Vítor Gonçalves, was an amateur footballer turned foreign exchange dealer. He graduated from the Portuguese military academy as an engineer in 1942. Gonçalves married, in 1950, Aida Rocha Afonso, with whom he had a son, Vitor, and a daughter, Maria João. In 1942, Gonçalves graduated from a Portuguese military academy in the Army Engineering Corps. The Primeira Liga (; English: Premier League, also written as Liga Portugal 1), also known as Liga Portugal Bwin for sponsorship reasons, is the top level of the Portuguese football league system. Organised and supervised by the Liga Portugal, it is contested by 18 teams since the 2014–15 season, with the three lowest placed teams relegated to the Liga Portugal 2 and replaced by the top-three non-reserve teams from this division. Founded in 1934 as Campeonato da Liga da Primeira Divisão, it was named Campeonato Nacional da Primeira Divisão from 1938 until 1999, when it was changed to its current naming. Taça de Honra (Honour Cup) is a Portuguese friendly football tournament played between teams of the Lisbon Football Association (AFL). It is the third oldest competition in Portugal after the championships of Lisbon and Porto. The format has varied, and before the 1959–60 season, the trophy was mostly given to the winner of the Lisbon championship. Afterwards, it was played as a four-team elimination tournament during pre-season, between the best-placed Lisbon teams in championships disputed in the previous season. After 20 years of inactivity, the competition returned for two years: 2014 and 2015.
