Vushtrria
Vushtrri ( sq-definite, Vushtrria) or Vučitrn ( sr-Cyrl, Вучитрн), is a city and municipality located in the Mitrovica District in northern Kosovo. According to the 2011 census, the town of Vushtrri has 26,964 inhabitants, while the municipality has 69,870 inhabitants. Vushtrri is surrounded by the city of Mitrovica to the north, Podujeva in the east, Obiliq in the south, Drenas in the south-west, and Skënderaj in the west. The municipality of Vushtrri has 67 villages. In antiquity, Vushtrri may have been known as Viciana. When the Roman Empire invaded Dardania in the 1st century BC, the Romans added the Latin suffix 'um' to the name of Viciana, therefore becoming Vicianum. In Serbian, ''Vučitrn'' is the name of the plant Ononis spinosa, which is abundant in the region. The main characteristic of the city is its cultural and historic monuments. Duboc Fortress
Duboc Fortress is situated above the Ceçan, part of the Ciçavica mountain chain, in the village of Duboc, approximately 10–12 km in the south-west of the Municipality of Vushtrri. History Duboc Fortress is a location of the Dardanic cultural group of the 8th and 9th centuries BCE Based on the findings of the cultural layers in this location, the discovered archaeological exhibits show about two different civilizations. Civilization A is in the lower layers underneath the civilization B, and the civilization B is in the upper layers. Civilization B or the Duboc Fortress is located in the Mountain of the Town, (alb. "Mali i Gjytetit") from the north-east to the west. The length of the wall of the Duboc fortress is 900 meters, with the width of 2–4 meters, the height it is not known. Podujevo ( sr-Cyrl, Подујево), Podujeva, or Besiana ( sq-definite, Podujevë or ''Besianë''), is a city and municipality in Kosovo's Pristina District. Samadrexha (Albanian: ''Samadrexhë''; Serbian Cyrillic: Самодрежа, ''Samodreža''), is a village in the Vushtrria municipality in Kosovo. It is inhabited exclusively by ethnic Albanians. Gazi Ali Beg Mosque
Gazi Ali Beg Mosque is a mosque located in the old core of the city of Vushtrri, 100m away from the Old Hammam, as part of the Gazi Ali Beg Complex. Build in the 15th century is one of the oldest cultural heritage monuments not only in the municipality of Vushtrri. History Gazi Ali Beg Mosque was built in the middle of 15th century. From the beginning until today, the Mosque has always served as a sacred object for the rites and religious ceremonies of the Islamic community. District Of Mitrovica
Mitrovica District ( sq, Rajoni i Mitrovicës, sr-cyrl, Косовскомитровачки округ, ''Kosovskomitrovački okrug'') is one of the unified seven districts of Kosovo. Vučitrn Massacre
The Vushtrri massacre was the mass killing of Kosovo Albanian refugees near Vushtrri, during the Kosovo War on 2–3 May 1999. Background A column of about 1,000 refugees were travelling in a convoy of about 100 tractors, who were fleeing fighting between the KLA and Serbian forces east of Vushtrri. Serbian Police and paramilitary forces caught up with the convoy that traveled south. On 2-3 May between Gornja Sudimlja and Donja Sudimlja ( sq, Studime e Eperme and Studime e Poshtme) near Vushtrri, an estimated one hundred men were killed. ICTY investigator Romeu Ventura stated that 120 civilians were murdered on 2 May by Serb forces and buried two days later in a mass grave five miles east of Vushtrri.
