Volta à Cidade Do Funchal
The Volta à cidade do Funchal (Tour of the city of Funchal in English) is an annual night road running, road race of about 6 km which is celebrated around Saint Silvester's Day on December 31 in Funchal, Madeira since 1958, making it the oldest Saint Silvester Road Race in Portugal and one of the oldest in Europe. It is based upon the Saint Silvester Marathon, a Brazilian race (held since 1925) which spawned numerous other New Year's Eve races. The Volta à cidade do Funchal is one of the city's foremost annual running events. It has been organised by AARAM (Associação de Atletismo da Região Autónoma da Madeira) since 1997. Saint Silvester's Day
Saint Sylvester's Day, also known as Silvester or the Feast of Saint Sylvester, is the day of the feast of Pope Sylvester I, a saint who served as Pope from 314 to 335. Medieval legend made him responsible for the conversion of emperor Constantine the Great, Constantine. Among the Western churches, the feast day is held on the anniversary of Saint Sylvester's death, 31 December, a date that, since the adoption of the Gregorian calendar, has coincided with New Year's Eve. For these Christian denominations, Saint Silvester's Day liturgically marks the Twelve Days of Christmas, seventh day of Christmastide. Eastern churches celebrate Sylvester's feast on a different day from the Western churches, i.e. on 2 January. Aurora Cunha
Aurora Cunha (born 31 May 1959, in Ronfe, near Guimarães) is a retired long-distance runner from Portugal, living in Póvoa de Varzim. From 1984 to 1992 she represented her native country in three consecutive Olympic Games. Cunha's greatest successes were in road running, at which she was a three-time World Champion. Hélder Mendes Abreu Ornelas (born 6 May 1974 in Nova Lisboa, Angola) is a Portuguese long-distance runner. He finished eighth in the long race at the 2001 World Cross Country Championships, fifteenth in the marathon at the 2006 European Athletics Championships and won the 2007 edition of the Prague International Marathon. He also won the 2005 Milan Marathon Doping In 2012 Ornelas became the first track and field athlete to get suspended for doping based on the biological passport. Ana Dias
Ana Maria Guerreiro Dias (born 15 January 1974) is a Portuguese long-distance and marathon runner. She is a four-time Olympian, and a multiple-time national record holder for the long-distance running (5000 metres, 10,000 metres, half-marathon, and marathon). She also set a personal best time of 2:28:49, by finishing fourth in the women's race at the 2003 Berlin Marathon. Athletic career At the age of twenty-two, Dias made her official debut for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, where she competed in the first ever Athletics at the 1996 Summer Olympics – Women's 5000 metres, women's 5000 metres. Carla Cristina Paquete Sacramento OIH (born 10 December 1971 in São Sebastião da Pedreira) is a middle distance runner from Portugal. Biography Sacramento won medals at a variety of distances but her speciality is the 1500 m. She won the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in 1997 in Athens after having won a bronze medal in the 1995 championships. Sacramento won her first national title in 1986 when she was only fifteen years old. She and Fernanda Ribeiro both excelled at a national level as young girls and have dominated Portuguese middle and long distance running since. Sacramento has run under 2 minutes for 800 m and 4 minutes for 1500 m many times, both of which marks are thought of as benchmarks of world class running. José Filipe da Silva Moreira (born 20 March 1982) is a Portuguese former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He spent most of his career with Benfica, appearing in 148 competitive matches and making his Primeira Liga debut at 19. He also competed in Wales and Cyprus.
