Alessandro Volta
Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta (, ; 18 February 1745 – 5 March 1827) was an Italian physicist, chemist and lay Catholic who was a pioneer of electricity and power who is credited as the inventor of the electric battery and the discoverer of methane. He invented the voltaic pile in 1799, and reported the results of his experiments in 1800 in a two-part letter to the president of the Royal Society. With this invention Volta proved that electricity could be generated chemically and debunked the prevalent theory that electricity was generated solely by living beings. Volta's invention sparked a great amount of scientific excitement and led others to conduct similar experiments, which eventually led to the development of the field of electrochemistry. Volta Cinematograph
The Volta Electric Theatre (later renamed the Lyceum Picture Theatre) was a film theatre in Dublin and was Ireland's first dedicated cinema. The site at 45 Mary Street was later demolished and is occupied today by a department store. In the early 1900s, demand for moving pictures was fierce and cinemas were springing up all over the world. After visiting Trieste, the writer James Joyce was determined to bring a cinema to Ireland, so after receiving the backing of his Italian friends, he set up the Cinematograph Volta on Mary Street. It opened its doors on 20 December 1909. Volta Regional Museum
The Volta Regional Museum is a museum in Ho, Ghana. The museum is dedicated to the history and traditions of the Volta Region. The museum is administered by the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board. History Before it was used as a museum, the building served as the Office of the Regional House of Chiefs. The building was sold to the government in 1967 and the museum was opened in 1973. In April 2014, the museum collaborated with Evangelical Presbyterian University College to hold the first memorial lecture to pay tribute to several contributors who have dedicated themselves to the study of the Ewe language, these contributors were Ghanaian doctors, Godfried Kportufe Agamah and Emmanuel Ablo, in addition to Professor Komla Amoaku, and the lecture also paid tribute to German Reverend Jakob Spieth. The Volta River Authority (VRA) is the main generator and supplier of electricity in Ghana. They are also the responsible for the maintenance of the hydro power supply plant. Volta Aluminum Company, known as VALCO, is an aluminium company based in Tema, Greater Accra Region founded by Kaiser Aluminum and now wholly owned by the government of Ghana. History VALCO was a joint venture with Kaiser Aluminum and ALCOA, major aluminum conglomerates both based in the United States, in the British Gold Coast colony in 1948.
