Volney Howard
Volney Erskine Howard (October 22, 1809 – May 14, 1889) was an American lawyer, statesman, and jurist. Career Volney Erskine Howard was born in Oxford County, Maine on October 22, 1809, to Richard Howard, a prosperous farmer. At the age of 22, Howard traveled to Mississippi to study law. He commenced law practice in Brandon, Mississippi. He was a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives in 1836; reporter of the supreme court of the State of Mississippi; unsuccessful Democratic candidate for election in 1840 to the Twenty-seventh Congress and editor of the ''Mississippian''. He moved to Texas during the Republic of Texas and Howard was appointed the first Attorney General of the State of Texas in 1846. He served in that role for only 6 months. He represented Texas's District 2 in the U.S. Congress from 1849 to 1853. Timothy Pilsbury
Timothy Pilsbury (April 12, 1789 – November 23, 1858) was a United States representative from Texas. He was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts where he attended the common schools. He was employed in a store for about two years before he became a sailor. During the War of 1812, he commanded the privateer ''Yankee''. After the war, he engaged in shipping and settled in Eastport, Maine. Pilsbury served as a member of the Maine House of Representatives in 1825 and 1826 and a member of the executive council 1827–1836. He was an unsuccessful candidate for election in 1836 to the Twenty-fifth Congress. He moved to Ohio and thence to New Orleans, Louisiana and later to Brazoria, Texas. Pilsbury was a member of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Texas in 1840 and 1841 and served in the Senate of that Republic in 1842. He was also the chief justice of the county court and judge of probate for Brazoria County, Texas. He was again a member of the Texas Senate in 1845. ... The history of Los Angeles began in 1781 when 44 settlers from central New Spain (modern Mexico) established a permanent settlement in what is now Downtown Los Angeles, as instructed by Spanish Governor of Las Californias, Felipe de Neve, and authorized by Viceroy Antonio María de Bucareli. After sovereignty changed from Mexico to the United States in 1848, great changes came from the completion of the Santa Fe railroad line from Chicago to Los Angeles in 1885. "Overlanders" flooded in, mostly white Protestants from the Lower Midwest and South. Los Angeles had a strong economic base in farming, oil, tourism, real estate and movies.
