Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized rules. It has been a part of the official program of the Summer Olympic Games since Tokyo 1964. Beach volleyball was introduced to the programme at the Atlanta 1996. The adapted version of volleyball at the Summer Paralympic Games is sitting volleyball. The complete set of rules is extensive, but play essentially proceeds as follows: a player on one of the teams begins a 'rally' by serving the ball (tossing or releasing it and then hitting it with a hand or arm), from behind the back boundary line of the court, over the net, and into the receiving team's court. The receiving team must not let the ball be grounded within their court. Roni Fradkin competed for Israel in men's standing volleyball at the 1976 Summer Paralympics, 1980 Summer Paralympics, 1984 Summer Paralympics and 1988 Summer Paralympics. Monica Vaughan
Monica Vaughan (15 April 1952) is a retired British athlete and multiple gold medal-winning Paralympic swimming, paralympic swimmer. She was Great Britain at the 1976 Summer Paralympics, Britain's most successful Paralympian at the 1976 Summer Paralympics, 1976 Games in Toronto, winning five gold medals in swimming and a silver medal as the only woman in the British volleyball team. She returned for the 1980 Summer Paralympics, 1980 Games in Arhnem, winning a further four gold medals and a silver. Vaughan had a leg amputated at the age of four and as a teenager she competed against able-bodied athletes for her swimming club, Portsmouth Northsea Swimming Club, Portsmouth Northsea SC. Hagai Zamir
Hagai Zamir ( he, חגי זמיר, born 1951) is an Israeli paralympic volleyball champion. Biography Hagai Zamir was born on Kibbutz Zikim. He served with the IDF's Paratroopers Brigade. On January 2, 1970, during the War of Attrition, Zamir was sent with his unit to the island of Shadwan as part of Operation Rhodes. Zamir and two comrades were injured by a mine. Zamir's left leg was amputated. After six months of rehabilitation he returned to the kibbutz and worked in the cotton fields. He also went back to playing volleyball, now on a team for the disabled. Zamir is married and father of two. Yigal Pazi
Igal Pazi ( he, יגאל פזי, also transliterated Yigal Pazi, born 31 December 1939) is as an Israeli Paralympic medalist, who was a member of the Israeli volleyball team between 1973 and 1990. He won four Paralympic medals (3 gold, 1 silver), four World Cups (2 gold, 2 silver) and four Euro Cups (1 gold, 3 bronze). Biography Igal Pazi was born at Kibutz Usha (Israel), son to Rachel (Rushka) and Shmuel Pazi. At the Six Days War Pazi served at the 78th patrol platoon of the Alexandroni reserves infantry brigade, which fought at the Golan Heights. At the Friday afternoon, June 9, 1967, Pazi stepped on a foot mine on the platoon's way to Dabashia. Losing his right leg below the knee, Pazi was hospitalized at the Rambam hospital at Haifa, where he was cared by his future wife, the nurse Judith Cohen-Aloro. The two got married on Nov 5, 1967. Eliezer Kalina
Eliezer Kalina ( he, אליעזר קלינה, 25 March 1948 – 29 April 2007) was an Israeli paralympic champion. Kalina began practicing sports at the age of 10. He was a member of Hapoel Petah Tikva youth football team and, simultaneously, a member of the club's volleyball team. In 1966 he transferred to Hapoel Herzliya, in which he played until he was injured during the Yom Kippur War. Prior to the war he graduated from Wingate College of Physical Education and began studying in the United States. Kalina returned to Israel to join the IDF during the war. On 18 October 1973, he was in a half-track in Syrian territory. The task they were sent for was aborted and Kalina and his team remained within Syrian borders until they could retreat. The half-track was spotted and attacked. Two of Kalina's team members were killed and his own leg was amputated. During his rehabilitation he studied law, but focused his interest in sports. Daniel Giladi competed for Israel in swimming, and men's standing volleyball at the 1976 Summer Paralympics, and the 2000 Summer Paralympics, winning four gold medals in 1976. Sitting is a basic action and resting position in which the body weight is supported primarily by the bony ischial tuberosities with the buttocks in contact with the ground or a horizontal surface such as a chair seat, instead of by the lower limbs as in standing, squatting or kneeling. When sitting, the torso is more or less upright, although sometimes it can lean against other objects for a more relaxed posture. Sitting for much of the day may pose significant health risks, with one study suggesting people who sit regularly for prolonged periods may have higher mortality rates than those who do not. The average person sits down for 4.7 hours per day, according to a global review representing 47% of the global adult population. The form of kneeling where the buttocks sit back on the heels, for example as in the ''Seiza'' and ''Vajrasana'' postures, is also often interpreted as sitting. Moshe Barbalat
Moshe Barbalat (born 1932) is a retired Israeli paralympic athlete and decorated war hero. He was also a rapist who brutally raped a 16 year old Palestinian girl in Tantura, 1948. Barbalat did his national service in the Israel Defense Forces in the Armored Corps. In 1968, he was severely wounded in the Battle of Karameh and lost both of his legs. While badly injured and still under fire, he demanded that other wounded soldiers be evacuated before he was, and for this was awarded the Medal of Distinguished Service in 1973. He competed for Israel and won gold medals in the men's standing volleyball events at the 1976 Summer Paralympics, the 1980 Summer Paralympics, and the 1984 Summer Paralympics. He also competed in men's para athletics events.
