Volkensinia
''Volkensinia'' is a monotypic genus of flowering plants belonging to the family Amaranthaceae. It only contains one known species; ''Volkensinia prostrata''. It is in the subfamily Amaranthoideae. Its native range is north eastern and eastern Tropical Africa, it is found in Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Tanzania. The genus name of ''Volkensinia'' is in honour of Georg Volkens (1855–1917), a German botanist born in Berlin. Georg Volkens
Georg Ludwig August Volkens (13 July 1855 – 10 January 1917) was a German botanist born in Berlin. He studied natural sciences at the Universities of University of Berlin, Berlin and University of Würzburg, Würzburg, graduating in 1882 with the thesis ''Ueber Wasserausscheidung in liquider Form an den Blaettern hoeherer Pflanzen''. As a student he was influenced by Alexander Braun (1805–1877), Julius von Sachs (1832–1897) and Simon Schwendener (1829–1919). In 1884-85 he conducted botanical research in Egypt on behalf of the ''Königlich-Preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften''. In 1887 he obtained his habilitation, followed by work as an assistant to Adolf Engler (1844–1930) at the Botanical Museum in Berlin. Amaranthoideae
The Amaranthoideae are a subfamily of the Amaranthaceae. The stamens have anthers with two lobes (locules) and four pollen sacs. The main distribution of the subfamily is in tropical America, in tropical and Southern Africa, and in Australia. The genera ''Amaranthus'' (the amaranths) and ''Celosia'' (the cockscombs) contain many ornamental species, as well as species whose seeds are used as pseudocereals and leaves as leaf vegetables. Systematics The subfamily Amaranthoideae comprises about 57 genera with about 330 species. Hans Schinz
Hans Schinz (6 December 1858 – 30 October 1941) was a Swiss explorer and botanist who was a native of Zürich. In 1884 he participated in an exploratory expedition to German Southwest Africa that was organized by German merchant Adolf Lüderitz (1834–1886). For the next few years Schinz undertook extensive scientific studies of the northern parts of the colony.
