Volcán is a town and corregimiento in Tierras Altas District, Chiriquí Province, Panama. It has a land area of and had a population of 12,717 as of 2010, giving it a population density of . Its population as of 1990 was 7,146; its population as of 2000 was 10,188. Volcan sits on an old lava flow from Volcán Barú, the highest point in Panama at 3,475 metres (11,460 feet). The low range of mountains to the south of Volcan were once part of Volcan Baru blown/slid several kilometers to their current location by a violent eruption of the volcano. Volcan is the Heart of the breadbasket of Panama. Major roads out of Volcan go to the farming communities of Cerro Punta, Plaza de Caisan, La Concepcion, Rio Sereno on the border with Costa Rica and the soon to be completed road to Boquete. Erin Nicole Volcán Smith (born January 12, 1984) is an international backstroke and individual medley swimmer from Venezuela. She is a former South American record holder, and current (2009) Venezuelan record holder. She swam for Venezuela at the 2008 Olympics. Michael Stephen Volcan (born March 3, 1962) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman who played 162 National Hockey League games for the Hartford Whalers and Calgary Flames from 1980 until 1984. He recorded eight goals and 33 assists in his career. Volcan was a third round draft pick, 50th overall by the Whalers in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft. He was the youngest player in the NHL in the 1980–81 season. Volcan retired following the 1990–91 season. Volcan was born in Edmonton, Alberta. Volcan played two seasons of junior hockey for the St. Albert Saints of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, where he was a teammate of future NHLers Mark Messier and Troy Murray, before joining the Portland Winter Hawks for the 1979 Western Hockey League playoffs.
