Voivod (band)
Voivod is a Canadian heavy metal band from Jonquière, Quebec (now Saguenay, Quebec). The original line-up consisted of vocalist Denis "Snake" Bélanger, guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour, drummer Michel "Away" Langevin and bassist Jean-Yves "Blacky" Thériault. The band has had numerous members changes throughout its -year career, with Langevin as the only remaining original member. Their current line-up consists of Langevin, Bélanger, Daniel "Chewy" Mongrain (guitar) and Dominic "Rocky" Laroche (bass). Voivod's musical style has changed several times since the band's origin in the early 1980s. Starting out as a speed metal band, Voivod have added a mix of progressive metal and thrash metal to create their own unique metal style. Hellfest (French Music Festival)
Hellfest (), also called Hellfest Summer Open Air, is a rock festival focusing on heavy metal music, held annually in June in Clisson, France. Its high attendance makes it the French music festival with the largest turnover. It is also one of the biggest metal festivals in Europe and the first to exist in France. It originated in another music festival, the Fury Fest, held from 2002 to 2005, in different areas of Pays de la Loire. Hellfest took over in 2006 and over the years has seen a continuous rise in visitors, from 22,000 in the first edition, to 55,000 tickets sold per day in 2017. In 2022, the seven-day festival featured 350 bands and was attended by 60,000 people per day. Denis Bélanger
Denis "Snake" Bélanger (born August 9, 1964) is a Canadian singer and songwriter. He is the lead singer and lyricist of heavy metal band Voivod. Early life Bélanger grew up in Jonquière, Quebec. Career Bélanger joined Michel Langevin, Denis D'Amour and Jean-Yves Thériault to form Voivod in 1982, in northern Quebec. He appeared on the albums ''War & Pain'', ''Rrröööaaarrr'', ''Killing Technology'', ''Dimension Hatröss'', '' Nothingface'', ''Angel Rat'' and '' The Outer Limits''. Bélanger departed the group in 1994, after completing a tour in support of ''The Outer Limits''. He formed his own band, Union Made with Peter Jackson and worked on the song "Dictatosaurus" with Dave Grohl's side project dubbed Probot. The ''Billboard'' 200 is a record chart ranking the 200 most popular music albums and EPs in the United States. It is published weekly by '' Billboard'' magazine and is frequently used to convey the popularity of an artist or groups of artists. Often, a recording act will be remembered by its " number ones", those of their albums that outperformed all others during at least one week. ''Nothingface'' is the fifth studio album by Canadian heavy metal band Voivod. It was released by Mechanic/MCA Records on 1989. The album marked a change for the band, expanding their music into a more progressive metal sound. Several riffs are heavily influenced by Igor Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring", specifically the centre section of "Pre-Ignition". Critical reception ''Nothingface'' is Voivod's most successful album to date, and their only album to enter the ''Billboard'' 200 charts, where it peaked at number 114. A music video made for the album's third track, a cover of Pink Floyd's " Astronomy Domine", received airplay on MTV's ''Headbangers Ball''. In 2005, ''Nothingface'' was ranked number 350 in ''Rock Hard'' magazine's book of ''The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time''. ''Kerrang!'' is a British weekly magazine devoted to rock, punk and heavy metal music, currently published by Wasted Talent (the same company that owns electronic music publication ''Mixmag''). It was first published on 6 June 1981 as a one-off supplement in the ''Sounds'' newspaper. Named after the onomatopoeic word that derives from the sound made when playing a power chord on a distorted electric guitar, ''Kerrang!'' was initially devoted to the new wave of British heavy metal and the rise of hard rock acts. Annihilator (band)
Annihilator is a Canadian thrash metal band founded in Ottawa in 1984. It is the highest-selling Canadian thrash metal group in history, having sold more than three million albums worldwide, although most sales have been generated outside of Canada. Along with Sacrifice, Voivod and Razor, Annihilator is known as one of the "big four" of Canadian thrash metal. They are also considered to be part of the "second wave" of thrash metal bands from the late 1980s and early 1990s. Razor (band)
Razor is a Canadian speed metal band formed in 1983 at Guelph, Ontario. They are recognized as the pioneers of Canadian thrash metal and have been referred to as one of the country's "big four", alongside Sacrifice, Voivod and Annihilator. A secondary member named John Scheffel was in the band at the time as the vocalist and guitarist, but left in 1984. Sacrifice (band)
Sacrifice is a Canadian thrash metal band from Toronto, Ontario. The band was formed by guitarists Rob Urbinati and Joe Rico in 1983. Sacrifice played a prominent role in the 1980s underground metal scene in Toronto, and along with Voivod, Razor and Annihilator, they are considered one of the "big four" of Canadian thrash metal. The band released four studio albums before parting ways in 1993. After coming back together to play a reunion concert in 2006, they released their fifth studio album ''The Ones I Condemn'' on Brazilian label Marquee Records in 2009. Progressive Metal
Progressive metal (sometimes shortened to prog metal) is a broad :Fusion music genres, fusion music genre melding heavy metal music, heavy metal and progressive rock, combining the loud "aggression" and amplified electric guitar, guitar-driven sound of the former with the more experimental, cerebral or "pseudo-classical" compositions of the latter. Heavy metal (or simply metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and United States. Jason Curtis Newsted (born March 4, 1963) is an American musician who was the bassist of heavy metal band Metallica from 1986 to 2001. He first performed with thrash metal band Flotsam and Jetsam from 1981 to 1986 before joining Metallica to succeed the deceased Cliff Burton. Newsted performed on the albums '' ...And Justice for All'' (1988), '' Metallica'' (1991), '' Load'' (1996), and '' Reload'' (1997), the most album appearances among Metallica's bassists. Eric Forrest
Eric Forrest (born 1970) is a Canadian heavy metal musician. Active since 1988, Forrest is best known for playing in a number of metal bands, including Voivod, E-Force, and Project Failing Flesh. Career During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Forrest was a member of the bands Liquid Indian and Thunder Circus. He joined Voivod in early 1994 as bassist and vocalist, picking up the nickname "E-Force". He recorded two studio albums with Voivod, '' Negatron'' (1995) and '' Phobos'' (1997), and the live album ''Voivod Lives'' (2000), before departing in 2001 when original singer Denis Bélanger returned.
