Voies ( el, Βοιές , feminine plural) is a former municipality in Laconia, Peloponnese, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Monemvasia, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 215.527 km2. It is on the southern tip of Cape Malea. It is a predominantly agricultural region with a few minor villages and one dominant town. ''Vatika'' is the common term for the area, but ''Voies'' is used in a more official context, particularly for postal situations. ''Voion'', the genitive, is used for description: for example, to differentiate the village of Agios Nikolaos in Voies from other villages and towns of the same name, one would use ''Agios Nikolaos Voion''. Neapoli is the administrative capital of the municipality, and is also the urban center to the numerous villages that surround the hinterland. Neapoli Voion
Neapoli Voion or Neapolis Voion ( el, Νεάπολη Βοιών) also named Vatika ( el, Βάτικα) is a small town in Laconia regional unit, southern Greece. It is built near the south end of Malea peninsula, close to the Cape Maleas. It is 335 km southeast of Athens and 115 km south of Sparta. Its port is the gateway for the island of south Peloponnese such as Kythera, Antikythera and Elafonisos. Neapoli is the part of Monemvasia municipality and Voies municipal unit. Its population is 3090 residents according to 2011 census. History Neapoli is built on the same site as the ancient Laconian city of Boeae, built in the 10th or 9th century BCE by the Heracleid Boeus. The city later became part of the city-state of Sparta. During the early Roman era the city belonged to the Koinon of Free Laconians and flourished. The city later declined and was completely destroyed in 375 AD by an earthquake. Monemvasia
Monemvasia ( el, Μονεμβασιά, Μονεμβασία, or ) is a town and municipality in Laconia, Greece. The town is located on a small island off the east coast of the Peloponnese, surrounded by the Myrtoan Sea. The island is connected to the mainland by a short causeway in length. Its area consists mostly of a large plateau some above sea level, up to wide and long. Founded in the sixth century, and thus one of the oldest continually-inhabited fortified towns in Europe, the town is the site of a once-powerful medieval fortress, and was at one point one of the most important commercial centres in the Eastern Mediterranean. The town's walls and many Byzantine churches remain as testaments to the town's history. Today, the seat of the municipality of Monemvasia is the town of Molaoi. Laconia or Lakonia ( el, Λακωνία, , ) is a historical and administrative region of Greece located on the southeastern part of the Peloponnese peninsula. Its administrative capital is Sparta. The word ''laconic''—to speak in a blunt, concise way—is derived from the name of this region, a reference to the ancient Spartans who were renowned for their verbal austerity and blunt, often pithy remarks. Elafonisos
Elafonisos ( el, Ελαφόνησος) is a small Greek island between the Peloponnese and Kythira. It lies off the coast of Cape Malea and Vatika. The area of the island is . Overview The population is between 300 and 350 during the winter but increases dramatically in the summer months. During July and August the number of tourist visitors reach over 3,000 per day (bringing with them some 1,600 cars). Many people visit the island for its light coloured, sandy beaches. Among the most well known of its beaches are ''Sarakiniko'', ''Fragos'' (Simos) and ''Panagias Nissia'', all filled with blue-green waters. Elafonisos is by far the largest inhabited island in the Peloponnese archipelago, and the only one that is a separate municipality. Velanidia ( el, Βελανίδια) is a village in Laconia, Greece, within the municipality of Monemvasia. It is situated at the southern edge of Peloponnese at the southeast edge of mountain range Parnon. It includes several Byzantine churches, giving it the nickname Small Agios Oros. This village is near Cape Maleas. History Velanidia is a Byzantine village. Established in 1718, this settlement was possibly a result of a unification of several smaller settlements, because of the need of a more organized community. Cape Malea
Cape Maleas (also ''Cape Malea''; el, Ακρωτήριον Μαλέας, colloquially Καβομαλιάς, ''Cavomaliás''), anciently Malea ( grc, Μαλέα) and Maleae or Maleai (Μαλέαι), is a peninsula and cape in the southeast of the Peloponnese in Greece. To distinguish it from the cape, the peninsula is sometimes referred to as "Epidavros Limira" peninsula, after the most prominent ancient city located on it. It separates the Laconian Gulf in the west from the Aegean Sea in the east. It is the second most southerly point of mainland Greece (after Cape Matapan) and once featured one of the largest light-houses in the Mediterranean. Agios Nikolaos, Voies
Agios Nikolaos is a village in Laconia, southern Greece, part of the municipality Monemvasia. Its permanent population in 2011 was 650, although its population increases during the summer months. The original name of the village dating back in the 17th Century was "Panagia" from a homonymous temple of Virgin Mary. Most of the inhabitants trace their ancestry from the Western parts of Crete that was occupied by the Ottomans in 1669 resulting to a wide refugee influx in the Vatica area. Moreover, people from the island of Kythera started populating the village from the early 19th Century and onwards. Known families include "Nychas" family presumably indigenous since the 17th Century, "Pavlakis" Cretan ancestry and "Michaletos" Venetian ancestry coming from Crete as well. The village has a strong diaspora concentrated in Sydney, Australia and Pretoria, South Africa.
