Voan Savay
Voan Savay is a Cambodian dancer and director of performing arts, considered as "the last Apsara of Cambodia" and a "legendary former ''prima ballerina'' of the Cambodian Royal Ballet". Biography A child prodigy of the Khmer Royal Ballet Voan Savay was born in 1950. As a child, she was introduced to the Khmer Royal Ballet at the Royal Palace. At age 12, she started travelling across Cambodia with the Khmer Royal Ballet for performances. In 1965, at the age of 15, she was crowned the ''prima ballerina'' or principal dancer, where she punctually replaced princess Bopha Devi, a position she held until 1970 when the royal family collapsed. In 1965, she joined the first trip to China with Khmer Royal Ballet. In 1971, Voan Savay was the star Apsara dancer with the Khmer Royal Ballet troupe when they went on tour to the United States. The United Nations Border Relief Operation (UNBRO) was a donor-nation funded relief effort for Cambodian refugees and others affected by years of warfare along the Thai-Cambodian border. Sisowath ( km, ស៊ីសុវត្ថិ, ; 7 September 1840 – 9 August 1927) was King of Cambodia from 27 April 1904 to his death in 1927. He was the son of King Ang Duong and half brother of Prince Si Votha and King Norodom. He is the progenitor of the House of Sisowath. Life Sisowath was given the birth name of "Ang Sar" (). When he was born, Cambodia was under joint Siamese and Vietnamese rule. The royal family lived in Battambang then under Siamese hegemony. Like his brother King Norodom, Sisowath was educated in the Siamese capital of Bangkok. He did not return to his native Cambodia until 1860, when his father and the ruling monarch, Ang Duong, died. Whiteface is a type of performance in which a person wears theatrical makeup in order to make themselves look like a white person. The term is a reversal of the form of performance known as blackface, in which makeup was used by a performer to make themselves look like a black person, usually to portray a stereotype.
