Vladimir Zantaria
Vladimir Zantaria is a poet and politician from Abkhazia. From 1999 until 2004 he served first as Minister for Culture and then as Vice Premier in the Government of President Ardzinba. Early life and career Zantaria was born on 27 September 1953 in the village of Tamysh, Ochamchira District. In 1975, he graduated from the philological faculty of the Sukhumi State Pedagogical Institute. Political career Zantaria was a member of the 1st convocation of the People's Assembly from 1992 to 1997. Between 1993 and 1994, he was Chairman of the State TV and Radio. In 1999, following the re-election of President Vladislav Ardzinba, Zantaria became Minister for Culture in the cabinet of Prime Minister Viacheslav Tsugba. On 19 July 2001, he was appointed as Vice Premier instead under Tsugba's successor Anri Jergenia. The Government of President Vladislav Ardzinba was the first Government of the Republic of Abkhazia. Formation In February 1995, the Ministry for Energy was transformed into the state company Abkhazenergo, renamed to Chernomorenergo in June. Vladislav Ardzinba
Vladislav Ardzinba ( ab, Владислав Арӡынба, ka, ვლადისლავ არძინბა; 14 May 1945 – 4 March 2010) was the first ''de facto'' President of Abkhazia. A historian by education, Ardzinba led Abkhazia to ''de facto'' independence in the 1992–1993 War with Georgia, but its ''de jure'' independence from Georgia remained internationally unrecognised during Ardzinba's two terms as President from 1994 to 2005. A noted specialist in Hittitology, he was a member of the first parliament to be elected democratically in the Soviet Union in 1989. The People's Assembly — Parliament of the Republic of Abkhazia ( ab, Аҧсны Жәлар Реизара – Апарламент, ka, აფხაზეთის რესპუბლიკის სახალხო კრება, russian: Народное Собрание — Парламент Республики Абхазия) is the unicameral legislature of the Republic of Abkhazia. Composition The People's Assembly has 35 members, elected for five-year terms in single-seat constituencies. Abkhazian State University
The Abkhazian State University is the only university in Abkhazia. It was founded in 1979 on the basis of the Sukhumi Pedagogical Institute. Its first rector was Zurab Anchabadze. The university consists the departments of physics and mathematics, biology and geography, history, philology, economics, law; pedagogical and agro-engineering departments. The first college in Abkhazia, the ''Sukhumi Agro-pedagogical Institute'' was founded in 1932 and transformed into the ''Maxim Gorky Pedagogical Institute'' the following year. Following the rallies and street demonstrations in 1978 it was transformed into Abkhazian State University with Abkhaz, Georgian and Russian sections.
