Vivien Kirk
Vivien Kirk is a New Zealand mathematician who studies dynamical systems. She is a professor of mathematics at the University of Auckland, where she also serves as associate dean, and was president of the New Zealand Mathematical Society for 2017–2019. Education and career After earning bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Auckland, Kirk went to the University of Cambridge for doctoral studies. She completed her Ph.D. in 1990; her dissertation, ''Destruction of tori in dissipative flows'', was supervised by Nigel Weiss. She was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Berkeley and at the California Institute of Technology. Kirk's notable students include Alona Ben-Tal. Alona Ben-Tal
Alona Ben-Tal is an Israeli and New Zealand applied mathematics, applied mathematician who works as an associate professor and deputy head of school in the School of Natural and Computational Sciences at Massey University. Her research concerns dynamical systems and the mathematical modeling of human and bird breathing and of electrical power systems. Education and career Ben-Tal originally studied mechanical engineering at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, earning a bachelor's degree there in 1991 and a master's degree in 1994. Nigel Weiss
Nigel Oscar Weiss FRS (16 December 1936 – 24 June 2020) was an astronomer and mathematician, and leader in the field of astrophysical and geophysical fluid dynamics. He was Emeritus Professor of Mathematical Astrophysics at the University of Cambridge. Education Born in South Africa, Weiss studied at Hilton College, Natal, Rugby School and Clare College, Cambridge, and had been a fellow of Clare College since 1965. He read for his PhD in 1961 with a thesis on Variable Hydromagnetic Motions. Career In 1987 he became Professor of Mathematical Astrophysics at the University of Cambridge. In mathematics, a dynamical system is a system in which a Function (mathematics), function describes the time dependence of a Point (geometry), point in an ambient space. The New Zealand Mathematical Society is a New Zealand based learned society of mathematicians. It is listed by the Royal Society of New Zealand as the affiliate organisation responsible for mathematics research, and by the International Mathematical Union as the national mathematical society of its country. The total membership in the society has varied from approximately 100 soon after its 1974 foundation to between 200 and 300 at its 25th anniversary in 1999. Miriam Dell
Dame Miriam Patricia Dell ( Matthews; 14 June 1924 – 22 March 2022) was a New Zealand women's advocate, botanist and schoolteacher. She was the president of the National Council of Women of New Zealand from 1970 to 1974 and the first New Zealand president of the International Council of Women from 1979 to 1984. She established the Committee on Women, the forerunner to New Zealand's Ministry for Women.
