Vivekananda Kendra
__NOTOC__ Vivekananda Kendra is a Hindu nationalist social service and "nation-building" organisation, claiming to represent the heritage of Swami Vivekananda. Closely affiliated with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the organisation is based near the Vivekananda Rock Memorial in Kanyakumari. The organisation was founded on 7 January 1972 by Eknath Ranade, a senior ''pracharak'' of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Its current president is A. Balakrishnan. The organisation has constructed a solid waste management and bio-gas plant in Mahabalipuram. Vivekananda Kendra received the Gandhi Peace Prize for 2015 for its contribution to rural development, education and development of natural resources. Kanyakumari
Kanniyakumari (; , referring to Devi Kanya Kumari), also known as Cape Comorin, is a city in Kanniyakumari district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. It is the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent and the southernmost city in mainland India, thus referred to as 'The Land's End'. The city is situated south of Thiruvananthapuram city, and about south of Nagercoil, the headquarters of Kanniyakumari district. Swami Vivekananda (; ; 12 January 1863 – 4 July 1902), born Narendranath Datta (), was an Indian Hindu monk, philosopher, author, religious teacher, and the chief disciple of the Indian mystic Ramakrishna. Vivekananda Rock Memorial
Vivekananda Rock Memorial is a monument and popular tourist attraction in Kanyakumari, India's southernmost tip. The memorial stands on one of the two rocks located about 500 meters off mainland of Vavathurai. It was built in 1970 in honour of Swami Vivekananda, who is said to have attained enlightenment on the rock. According to legends, it was on this rock that Goddess Kanyakumari (Parvathi) performed ''tapas'' in devotion of lord Shiva. A meditation hall known as ''Dhyana Mandapam'' is also attached to the memorial for visitors to meditate. The design of the ''mandapa'' incorporates different styles of temple architecture from all over India. Eknath Ranade
Eknath Ramakrishna Ranade (19 November 1914 – 22 August 1982) was a social activist and leader that led the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Having joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) while still in school, he became an organiser and leader for the organisation, rising through its ranks to serve as its general secretary from 1956 to 1962. Ranade was greatly influenced by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, and compiled a book of Vivekananda's writings. During the 1963–72 period, Ranade is considered to have played an instrumental role in the constructing of the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the Vivekananda Kendra at Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu. The International Gandhi Peace Prize, named after Mahatma Gandhi, is awarded annually by the Government of India. As a tribute to the ideals espoused by Gandhi, the Government of India launched the International Gandhi Peace Prize in 1995 on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Mohandas Gandhi.
