Vitus (), whose name is sometimes rendered Guy or Guido, was a Christian martyr from Sicily. His surviving hagiography is pure legend. Vitus Jonassen Bering (baptised 5 August 1681 – 19 December 1741),All dates are here given in the Julian calendar, which was in use throughout Russia at the time. also known as Ivan Ivanovich Bering, was a Danish cartographer and explorer in Russian service, and an officer in the Russian Navy. He is known as a leader of two Russian expeditions, namely the First Kamchatka Expedition and the Great Northern Expedition, exploring the north-eastern coast of the Asian continent and from there the western coast on the North American continent. The Bering Strait, the Bering Sea, Bering Island, the Bering Glacier, and Vitus Lake were all named in his honor. Vitus Bering (1617–1675)
Vitus Pedersen Bering (6 October 1617 – 20 May 1675) was a Danish poet and historian. He served as Danish Historiographer Royal and was the great uncle of the explorer Vitus Bering (1681–1741). Early life and education Vitus Pedersen Bering was born in Viborg, Denmark. Bering was the son of the city mayor Peder Pedersen Bering and Maren Vitusdatter Brun. He graduated from Viborg Katedralskole in 1635. He soon attracted attention for his poems in Latin and was called to serve as steward for Otte Thott, son of Scania county governor Tage Thott (1580–1658). He subsequently conducted a seven-year foreign trip to Leiden (1639), Orléans (1640), Siena (1642), Rome and Padua (1647) and Strasbourg and Basel (1648). Vitus of Hungary ( la, Vitus Pannonius or ''Vitus de Hungaria'', hu, Magyarországi Vid; died 1297) was a Hungarian Augustinian friar in the 13th century, who was later beatified. Monastic life Contemporary sources have preserved neither his name nor activities. 18th-century historiographical works – ''Ungaricae sanctitatis indicia'' and the Bollandists' '' Acta Sanctorum Ungariae I.'' – state that Vitus was a member of the Augustinian Hermits. It is possible he was born in Várad (present-day Oradea, Romania), as a 17th-century author Nicolaus Crusenius claimed. Vitus Huonder
Vitus Huonder (born 21 April 1942) is a Swiss prelate of the Catholic Church who was bishop of Chur from 2007 to 2019. Vitus Huonder was born in Trun on 21 April 1942. He studied at the Pontifical Atheneum Saint Anselm and at the University of Fribourg, earning a licentiate in theology. He was ordained a priest of the diocese of Chur on 25 September 1971 and then continued his studies, earning a doctorate in theology in Fribourg. He became vicar general of Chur in 1998. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him bishop of Chur on 8 July 2007. He received his episcopal consecration on 8 September 2007 from Amédée Grab, his predecessor as bishop of Chur. His tenure proved controversial to some, as he reaffirmed orthodox Catholic doctrine in strong and uncompromising terms. Pope Francis accepted his resignation on 20 May 2019. Vitus Georg Tönnemann
Vitus Georg Tönnemann (1659–1740), a German Jesuit, was the only confessor to Emperor Charles VI from 1711 to 1740 - throughout his reign. Despite that position, he is largely a forgotten figure now. Biography Tönnemann was born in 1659 in Höxter, the son of Heinrich Tönnemann, lawyer and adviser to the Prince-Bishop of Muster (von Galen). His nephew, Baron Christoph von Tönnemann, became an Imperial Court Judge in Wetzlar. Tönnemann was educated at the Jesuit Gymnasium in Paderborn, then studied Literae Humaniores for four years at the Paderborn University. On 7 December 1677 he entered the Jesuit Order, taking the name Vitus. As a novice he went to their college at Trier. He completed his theological studies at Munster University, receiving a doctorate in Philosophy ''summa cum laude'' (Latin honors).
