Vitaliano Brancati
Vitaliano Brancati (; 24 July 1907 – 25 September 1954) was an Italian novelist, dramatist, poet and screenwriter. Biography Born in Pachino, Syracuse, Brancati studied in Catania, where he graduated in letters and where he spent the most part of his life. While he started writing at young age and at 25 years old he was already the author of six books, which were largely influenced by fascist ideals and which were later rejected by the same Brancati, critics tend to set the starting point of his career in 1935, when he released the collection of short stories ''In search of a cause''. Brancati got his first and probably major success in 1941, with the novel '' Don Giovanni in Sicilia'', a vibrant and humorous portrait of the Sicilian temperament. In 1944 he wrote the novel ''Gli anni perduti'' ("The Lost Years"), a bold satire of Benito Mussolini's megalomania, and in 1946 ''Vecchio con gli stivali'' ("Old Man in Boots"), a satirical short story inspired by the vicissitudes ... Pachino
Pachino (; scn, Pachinu ) is a town and ''comune'' in the Province of Syracuse, Sicily (Italy). The name derives from the Latin word ''bacchus,'' which is the Roman god of wine, and the word ''vinum'', which means wine in Latin; originally the town was named ''Bachino'' which eventually was changed to ''Pachino'' when, in Sicily, Italian became the official spoken and written language. It was founded in 1760 by the nobles Starrabba, princes of Giardinelli and marquises of Rudinì, on the hill of the feud of Scibini, where a preexisting tower was built in 1494. Pachino was invaded in 1943 by the British 8th Army as a part of the allied invasion of Sicily. ''Paolo il caldo'' ( in English: ''Hot Paolo'') is a novel by Vitaliano Brancati, and also of a 1974 Italian film based on that novel. Novel The novel is set in Catania and in Rome around the time of the Second World War. It tells the story of a Sicilian baron who gives in to desires of the flesh, beginning at an early age and continuing through his adulthood, when he realizes what an empty life he has led. The book explores the themes of sexual passion and of lust, sometimes unbridled and morbid. The novel was published in 1955, a year after the author's death.
