Viscount Montagu
Viscount Montagu was a title in the Peerage of England. It was created on 2 September 1554 for Anthony Browne of the Noble House of Montagu. It became extinct on the death of the ninth Viscount in 1797. The title Viscount Montagu was chosen from line of descent from John Neville, 1st Marquess of Montagu. His daughter, Lucy Neville, was the grandmother of Anthony Browne. He was made a Viscount to correlate to the wealth of the Browne family. Cowdray House became the established seat of the Viscounts Montagu. Browne Baronets
There have been ten baronetcies created for persons with the surname Browne (as distinct from Brown and Broun), six in the Baronetage of Great Britain, three in the Baronetage of Ireland and one in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia. George Browne, 8th Viscount Montagu
George Samuel Browne, 8th Viscount Montagu (26 June 1769 – October 1793) was an English nobleman. While traveling in Europe with his friend Charles Sedley Burdett (second son of Francis Burdett), the two became obstinately determined to ride a fishing boat over the rapids of the Rhine at Laufenburg, despite the warnings of the local inhabitants, none of whom could be hired or persuaded to help them. They died in the attempt, and he was succeeded in the viscountcy by a distant cousin, a clergyman. In the same week that the unfortunate Viscount met his death, the family home of Cowdray House was destroyed by fire; a circumstance which provided the foundation for a factitious legend of a "curse of fire and water" upon the Browne family for having received Battle Abbey at the dissolution of the monasteries. Anthony Joseph Browne, 7th Viscount Montagu (1728 – 9 April 1787) was an English peer and landowner. He was the son of Anthony Browne, 6th Viscount Montagu, by his marriage to Barbara Webb. On 22 July 1765, at St George's, Hanover Square, Montagu married Frances Falconer, daughter of Herbert Mackworth and the widow of Alexander Falconer, 6th Lord Falconer of Halkerton,George Edward Cokayne, ''Complete Peerage of England, Scotland, Ireland, Great Britain and the United Kingdom'', vol. 3 (1890)p. 310/ref> and they were the parents of George Browne, 8th Viscount Montagu, and Elizabeth Mary Browne. Francis Browne, 4th Viscount Montagu
Francis Browne, 4th Viscount Montagu (1638 – June 1708) from 1656 to 1682, was an English peer. He was the eldest son of Francis Browne, 3rd Viscount Montagu and his wife Lady Elizabeth Somerset, daughter of Henry Somerset, 1st Marquess of Worcester. Browne succeeded his father as Viscount Montagu in 1682, and served as assistant cupbearer at the coronation of James II of England in 1685. In February 1688, he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Sussex to replaced Charles Sackville, 6th Earl of Dorset, who had refused to put the "Three Questions" to the Sussex bench (to see if they would favor repeal of the Test and Penal Acts against Catholics). However, when the Glorious Revolution broke out, Montagu was ousted from the lieutenancy and replaced by Dorset again. Montagu married Lady Mary Herbert, daughter of William Herbert, 1st Marquess of Powis. Peerage Of England
The Peerage of England comprises all peerages created in the Kingdom of England before the Act of Union in 1707. In that year, the Peerages of England and Scotland were replaced by one Peerage of Great Britain. There are five peerages in the United Kingdom in total. English Peeresses obtained their first seats in the House of Lords under the Peerage Act 1963 from which date until the passage of the House of Lords Act 1999 all Peers of England could sit in the House of Lords. The ranks of the English peerage are, in descending order, duke, marquess, earl, viscount, and baron. While most newer English peerages descend only in the male line, many of the older ones (particularly older baronies) can descend through females. Francis Browne, 3rd Viscount Montagu
Francis Browne, 3rd Viscount Montagu (2 July 1610 – 2 November 1682) was the eldest son of Anthony-Maria Browne, 2nd Viscount Montagu and Jane Sackville, the daughter of Thomas Sackville, 1st Earl of Dorset. He succeeded his father on 23 October 1629. His seat was the family home at Cowdray House and the estate included Easebourne Priory and Verdley. A plan of these commissioned by Browne, executed by cartographer Nicholas Lane in February 1635, is now held in the West Sussex Record Office. Browne also inherited the substantial park estate of Battle Abbey. Browne married Lady Elizabeth Somerset (1618–1684), daughter of Henry Somerset, 1st Marquess of Worcester by licence on 6 July 1637. Julia Roundell, however, claimed that they were married prior to Francis succeeding the title and a first son, Anthony, was baptised at Battle Abbey in August 1629.
