Viscount Ingleby
Viscount Ingleby, of Snilesworth in the North Riding of the County of York, was a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 17 January 1956 for the Conservative politician and former Minister of Pensions and National Insurance, Osbert Peake. He was succeeded by his only son, the second Viscount. The title became extinct on his death in 2008. North Riding Of Yorkshire
The North Riding of Yorkshire is a subdivision of Yorkshire, England, alongside York, the East Riding and West Riding. The riding's highest point is at Mickle Fell with 2,585 ft (788 metres). From the Restoration it was used as a lieutenancy area, having been previously part of the Yorkshire lieutenancy. Each riding was treated as a county for many purposes, such as quarter sessions. An administrative county, based on the riding, was created with a county council in 1889 under the Local Government Act 1888. In 1974 both the administrative county and the North Riding of Yorkshire lieutenancy were abolished, replaced in most of the riding by the non-metropolitan county and lieutenancy of North Yorkshire. Osbert Peake, 1st Viscount Ingleby
Osbert Peake, 1st Viscount Ingleby, PC (30 December 1897 – 11 October 1966) was a British Conservative Party politician. He served as Minister of National Insurance and then as Minister of Pensions and National Insurance from 1951 to 1955. Early life Peake was educated at Eton before training at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He served with the Coldstream Guards during the First World War, before joining the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry. He entered Christ Church, Oxford in 1919 and graduated in history in 1921. In 1923 he was called to the bar at the Inner Temple. Career After unsuccessfully contesting Dewsbury in 1922, Peake entered Parliament as Member of Parliament (MP) for Leeds North in 1929. In April 1939, he was appointed as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department and in October 1944 he became Financial Secretary to the Treasury. Osmotherley, North Yorkshire
Osmotherley is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton hills in North Yorkshire, six miles north-east of Northallerton. The village is at the western edge of the North York Moors National Park. Osmotherley is on the route of the 110-mile Cleveland Way, one of the National Trails established by Natural England. Origin of name Osmotherley probably means the clearing or 'ley', belonging to a Viking called 'Asmund' or a Saxon called 'Osmund'. In '' Domesday Book'' it was recorded as Asmundrelac and subsequently as Osmundeslay and Osmonderlay. Local legend says that Osmotherley was named after the mother of a villager named Oswald or Osmund, who went out to gather firewood in the winter. When she did not return her son became anxious and went out to look for her. He found her lying in the snow, dead or dying from the cold. Martin Raymond Peake, 2nd Viscount Ingleby (31 May 1926 – 14 October 2008) was a British peer and businessman. Early life Ingleby was the only son of Osbert Peake, created Viscount Ingleby in 1956, and his wife Lady Joan Capell. He succeeded to the viscountcy on his father's death in 1966. He was rendered a paraplegic early in life due to polio. He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Oxford, and prior to his disability, was a lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards from 1945 to 1947. In 1955, he was called to the bar at the Inner Temple.
