Viscount Addison
Viscount Addison, of Stallingborough in the County of Lincoln, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 6 July 1945 for the physician and politician Christopher Addison, 1st Baron Addison. He had already been created Baron Addison, of Stallingborough in the County of Lincoln, on 22 May 1937, also in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. the titles are held by his grandson, the fourth Viscount, who succeeded his father in 1992 (who in his turn had succeeded his elder brother in 1976). The family seat is Churn Barn, near Oundle, Peterborough. Christopher Addison, 1st Viscount Addison
Christopher Addison, 1st Viscount Addison, (19 June 1869 – 11 December 1951), was a British medical doctor and politician. A member of the Liberal and Labour parties, he served as Minister of Munitions during the First World War and was later Minister of Health under David Lloyd George and Leader of the House of Lords under Clement Attlee. He was a prominent anatomist and perhaps the most eminent doctor ever to enter the Commons. He was a leader in issues of health, wartime munitions, housing and agriculture. Although not highly visible, he played a major role in the post war governments after both world wars. Addison worked hard to promote the National Insurance scheme in 1911. Lloyd George made him the first Minister of Health when the department was created in 1919, and Addison oversaw an expansion of council housing after the Great War with an increase in public funding to local authority housing schemes with the Housing, Town Planning, &c. William Addison, 4th Viscount Addison
William Matthew Wand Addison, 4th Viscount Addison (born 13 June 1945), is a British peer. The son of Michael Addison, 3rd Viscount Addison, he succeeded the Viscountcy on the death of his father in 1992. He was educated at Westminster School and King's School, Bruton. In the House of Lords, Viscount Addison had sat as a Conservative peer until the House of Lords Act 1999 removed his automatic right to sit in the House. He stood for election as an elected hereditary peer (and therefore possessing the right to continue to sit). However, he finished 47th amongst the Conservative peers (a total of 42 Conservative peers were elected). He has stood in subsequent by-elections for election to the House, but to date has been unsuccessful. Michael Addison, 3rd Viscount Addison (12 April 1914 – 23 March 1992), was a British civil servant and academic. Addison was the second son of Christopher Addison, 1st Viscount Addison, and his first wife, Isobel Mackinnon Gray. His father, a physician and politician, was created a viscount in 1945. He was educated at Hele's School, Exeter, and Balliol College, Oxford. He was in the Civil Service between 1936 and 1965. He served as an intelligence officer in the Second World War between 1941 and 1945 as a Flying Officer with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was a senior lecturer between 1965 and 1976 in the Polytechnic of Central London, School of Management Studies, London. He succeeded in the viscountcy on the death of his brother, who died with no male heir in 1976. Stallingborough is a village and civil parish in North East Lincolnshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 1,234. History Prehistory-1840 The area around Stallingborough may have been inhabited in prehistoric times; south-east of the village there is evidence of an Iron Age complex of enclosures. Stallingborough is recorded as a manor (as "Stalinburg" or "Stalingeburg") in the 11th century ''Domesday Book''. Peterborough () is a cathedral city in Cambridgeshire, east of England. It is the largest part of the City of Peterborough unitary authority district (which covers a larger area than Peterborough itself).
