State Route 97 (SR 97) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. Known as Pipers Gap Road, the state highway runs from SR 89 in Galax east to SR 608 and SR 620 next to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Route description SR 97 begins at an intersection with SR 89 (Main Street) in the independent city of Galax. The state highway heads east and immediately exits the city limits and enters Grayson County. SR 97 parallels Chestnut Creek until the highway enters Carroll County, then follows Wards Mill Branch to its source near the hamlet of Pipers Gap. Galax, VA
Galax is an independent city in the southwestern part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 6,720. The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the city of Galax with neighboring Carroll County for statistical purposes. Galax is bounded to the northeast by Carroll County and to the southwest by Grayson County. The Eastern Continental Divide, Eastern Divide or Appalachian Divide is a hydrographic divide in eastern North America that separates the easterly Atlantic Seaboard watershed from the westerly Gulf of Mexico watershed. The divide nearly spans the United States from south of Lake Ontario through the Florida peninsula, and consists of raised terrain including the Appalachian Mountains to the north, the southern Piedmont Plateau and lowland ridges in the Atlantic Coastal Plain to the south. Blue Ridge Mountains
The Blue Ridge Mountains are a physiographic province of the larger Appalachian Mountains range. The mountain range is located in the Eastern United States, and extends 550 miles southwest from southern Pennsylvania through Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia. This province consists of northern and southern physiographic regions, which divide near the Roanoke River gap. State Route 89 (SR 89) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. The state highway runs from the North Carolina state line, where the highway continues as North Carolina Highway 89 (NC 89), north to U.S. Route 58 (US 58) and US 221 in Galax.
