Virginia State Route 121
State Route 121 is a state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. Known as Max Meadows Road, the state highway runs from Interstate 77, I-81, U.S. Route 11, and US 52 at Fort Chiswell north to SR 1004 and SR 1006 in Max Meadows in eastern Wythe County. SR 121 is part of a Virginia Byway that continues south along US 52 and west along SR 610 to Wytheville. Route description SR 121 begins at a diamond interchange with I-77, I-81, and US 11 a short distance west of the interchange where I-77 turns south toward Charlotte and I-81 and US 11 continue east toward Roanoke. US 52 runs concurrently with the three other highways west to Wytheville and heads south from the interchange as Fort Chiswell Road toward Hillsville. SR 121 starts as a four-lane divided highway within the interchange but immediately reduces to a two-lane undivided road to head north to Max Meadows. U.S. Route 52 (US 52) in Virginia runs north–south through the southwestern part of the state along the Interstate 77 (I-77) corridor. Though an even-numbered U.S. route, it is signed north–south in Virginia (standard convention being to label even-numbered U.S. routes with east–west designations). In some other states along its route, it is signed east–west. The Virginia segment is signed such that US 52 north corresponds to the general westward direction of the highway, and ''vice versa''. 1933 Renumbering (Virginia)
In 1933, the U.S. state of Virginia renumbered almost all of its state highways. This renumbering was caused by the assignment of numbers from 600 up to the new secondary system, but all three-digit numbers were affected. At the same time, all numbers that conflicted with U.S. Routes - except State Route 13 - were renumbered, and all long overlaps with U.S. Routes were eliminated. Several new routes had the same numbers as U.S. Routes and served as their extensions. List of routes Prior to 1933, routes were assigned by district. Two-digit routes generally crossed district lines, while three-digit routes were assigned with their first digit as the district number. Wytheville, Virginia
Wytheville is a town in, and the county seat of, Wythe County, in southwestern Virginia, United States. It is named after George Wythe, a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence, and mentor to Thomas Jefferson. Wytheville's population was 8,211 at the 2010 census. Interstate Highways 77 and 81 were constructed to intersect at the town, long a crossroads for travelers. During the American Civil War, Wytheville had a strategic importance. Concurrency (road)
A concurrency in a road network is an instance of one physical roadway bearing two or more different route numbers. When two roadways share the same right-of-way, it is sometimes called a common section or commons. Other terminology for a concurrency includes overlap, coincidence, duplex (two concurrent routes), triplex (three concurrent routes), multiplex (any number of concurrent routes), dual routing or triple routing. Concurrent numbering can become very common in jurisdictions that allow it. Where multiple routes must pass between a single mountain crossing or over a bridge, or through a major city, it is often economically and practically advantageous for them all to be accommodated on a single physical roadway.
