Virginia State Route 116 (1930-1932)
State Route 69 (SR 69) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. Known as Lead Mine Road, the state highway runs from SR 636 in Austinville east to U.S. Route 52 (US 52) in Poplar Camp. SR 69 is the last remnant of a much longer route. At its peak from 1940 to 1945, this route (then numbered State Route 81) ran from State Route 91 at Lodi east via St. Clair Bottom, Sugar Grove, Cedar Springs, Speedwell, Porters Crossroads, and Austinville to today's SR 69. However, it was never fully continuous; portions from Sugar Grove to Cedar Springs and west of Porters Crossroads to east of Austinville were secondary routes. Austinville is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) on the New River in southern Wythe County, Virginia, United States. It was first listed as a CDP in the 2020 census with a population of 119. New River Trail State Park runs through Austinville, and Shot Tower Historical State Park is located nearby. The town is the birthplace of Stephen F. Austin, for whose family it is named. The ZIP code (mail delivery region) for Austinville extends south into neighboring Carroll County. Bethany, Virginia
Bethany is a town in southern Brooke County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 756 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Weirton–Steubenville metropolitan area. It is best known as the home of Bethany College, a private liberal arts college that was the first institution of higher education in what is now West Virginia. History The town most likely was named after Bethany, a biblical place where Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead (although there is no public record of the dead rising in West Virginia). State Route 91 (Virginia 1940)
State Route 91 (SR 91) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. The state highway runs from the Tennessee state line near Damascus, where the highway continues as Tennessee State Route 91 (SR 91), north to U.S. Route 19 Business (US 19 Business) and US 460 Business at Frog Level. SR 91 connects Damascus in southeastern Washington County with the northeastern county town Glade Spring, where the highway has junctions with US 11 and Interstate 81 (I-81). The state highway also indirectly connects Saltville in northwestern Smyth County and Tazewell, the county seat of Tazewell County. 1933 Renumbering (Virginia)
In 1933, the U.S. state of Virginia renumbered almost all of its state highways. This renumbering was caused by the assignment of numbers from 600 up to the new secondary system, but all three-digit numbers were affected. At the same time, all numbers that conflicted with U.S. Routes - except State Route 13 - were renumbered, and all long overlaps with U.S. Routes were eliminated. Several new routes had the same numbers as U.S. Routes and served as their extensions. List of routes Prior to 1933, routes were assigned by district. Two-digit routes generally crossed district lines, while three-digit routes were assigned with their first digit as the district number. State Route 90 (Virginia)
State Route 90 (SR 90) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. Known as Main Street, the state highway runs from SR 616 and SR 749 north to Interstate 81 (I-81) within Rural Retreat in western Wythe County. SR 90 connects Rural Retreat with I-81 and U.S. Route 11 (US 11). Route description SR 90's southern terminus is at the center of the town of Rural Retreat at the intersection of Main Street and Baumgardner Avenue. Main Street continues south as SR 749 and Baumgardner Avenue is SR 616 in both directions. The state highway heads north and has a grade crossing of Norfolk Southern Railway's Pulaski District. History The Kimberling Lutheran Cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980; the Rural Retreat Depot was listed in 2014. State Route 15 (Virginia Pre-1933)
U.S. Route 52 (US 52) in Virginia runs north–south through the southwestern part of the state along the Interstate 77 (I-77) corridor. Though an even-numbered U.S. route, it is signed north–south in Virginia (standard convention being to label even-numbered U.S. routes with east–west designations). In some other states along its route, it is signed east–west. The Virginia segment is signed such that US 52 north corresponds to the general westward direction of the highway, and ''vice versa''. U.S. Route 21 or U.S. Highway 21 (US 21) is a major north–south United States Numbered Highway in the Southeastern United States that travels . The southern terminus is in Hunting Island State Park, South Carolina, south of the junction with US 21 Business and South Carolina Highway 802 (SC 802) in Beaufort. The northern terminus is in Wytheville, Virginia at an interchange with Interstate 81 (I-81) and US 52. Concurrency (road)
A concurrency in a road network is an instance of one physical roadway bearing two or more different route numbers. When two roadways share the same right-of-way, it is sometimes called a common section or commons. Other terminology for a concurrency includes overlap, coincidence, duplex (two concurrent routes), triplex (three concurrent routes), multiplex (any number of concurrent routes), dual routing or triple routing. Concurrent numbering can become very common in jurisdictions that allow it. Where multiple routes must pass between a single mountain crossing or over a bridge, or through a major city, it is often economically and practically advantageous for them all to be accommodated on a single physical roadway. State Route 12 (Virginia Pre-1933)
U.S. Route 58 (US 58) is an east–west U.S. Highway that runs for from U.S. Route 25E just northwest of Harrogate, Tennessee, to U.S. Route 60 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Until 1996, when the Cumberland Gap Tunnel opened, US 58 ran only inside the commonwealth of Virginia (and it now runs only about 1 mile outside of Virginia into Tennessee before terminating). It was then extended southwest along a short piece of former US 25E, which no longer enters Virginia, to end at the new alignment in Tennessee.
