Virginia Historic Landmark
A Virginia Historic Landmark is a structure, site, or place designated as a landmark by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. Inclusion process Nominations for the Virginia Landmark Register are simultaneously processed for inclusion on the National Register for Historic Places. Both registries were formed in 1966. There are two parts to the selection process for designating landmarks: # evaluation and nomination with the latter contingent on passing the evaluation stage. # upon accepting the nomination for the state level landmark status, the State Review Board makes a recommendation on whether the State Historic Preservation Officer should submit it to the Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places in Washington, D.C. Michie Tavern
Michie Tavern (Pron: ), located in Albemarle County, Virginia, is a Virginia Historic Landmark that was established in 1784 by Scotsman William Michie, though in Earlysville. The Tavern served as the social center of its community and provided travelers with food, drink and lodging. It remained in operation, in the Michie family, until 1910, when it came to be owned by the Commonwealth of Virginia. In 1927, the Tavern was purchased by Josephine Henderson, who had it moved seventeen miles from Earlysville to its present location, close to Monticello. History In 1746, Major John Henry sold land in northern Albemarle County to John Michie. His son, William Michie, inherited the property from his father and built a house. Many people came to his house looking for food and a place to sleep, so William obtained a license to operate an ordinary in 1784 and operated a tavern, inn, and restaurant. Sherwood Forest Plantation
Sherwood Forest Plantation Foundation is located on the north bank of the James River in Charles City County, Virginia. The main plantation house, built in 1730, was the home of President John Tyler (1790–1862) for the last twenty years of his life. It is located on State Route 5, a scenic byway which runs between the independent cities of Richmond and Williamsburg. The house is located approximately from the river. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961. History Sherwood Forest is the only private residence in the United States to have been owned by two unrelated U.S. presidents. Seay's Chapel Methodist Church is a historic Methodist church located near Palmyra, Fluvanna County, Virginia. Ramsay is a historic estate located at Greenwood in Albemarle County, Virginia. Contributing elements on the estate include the main house (c. 1900), barn (c. 1937), garden (c. 1937), cottage (c. 1950), tenant house and garage (c. 1900), main house garage (c. 1900), potting shed (c. 1937), three greenhouse ruins (c. 1939), smoke house, chicken house, equipment shed, slave cabin ruins (c. 1830 and moved 1930), and a circular turnaround (c. 1930's). The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier, part of Pamplin Historical Park, is located in Petersburg, Virginia. A Civil War museum that has won a number of US and international awards and recognition, the museum is ''Duty Called Me Here'' as well as The Civil War Store, The Pamplin Board Room, and the Remembrance Wall. Duty Called Me Here is an exhibit that comprises seven galleries to allow to visitors to meet the 3 million soldiers who served during the Civil War using videos, computers and life-size dioramas, including the multi-sensory battlefield simulation, "Trial By Fire," designed originally by award-winning experience designer Bob Rogers (designer) and the design team BRC Imagination Arts. Pamplin Historical Park is a 424-acre private sector historical park located near Petersburg, Virginia. The park preserves open space near Richmond, Virginia in Dinwiddie County, Virginia and serves the dual use of preserving a significant fragment of the Petersburg Breakthrough Battlefield, a National Historic Landmark, and key components of the Third Battle of Petersburg. Natural Bridge is a geological formation in Rockbridge County, Virginia, comprising a natural arch with a span of . It is situated within a gorge carved from the surrounding mountainous limestone terrain by Cedar Creek, a small tributary of the James River. A landmark is a recognizable natural or artificial feature used for navigation, a feature that stands out from its near environment and is often visible from long distances. In modern use, the term can also be applied to smaller structures or features, that have become local or national symbols. Fairfield Plantation (Gloucester County, Virginia)
__NOTOC__ Fairfield plantation was a historic tobacco plantation from 17th century Colony of Virginia, owned by the Burwell family of Virginia from 1642 to 1787. The house was destroyed in 1897 due to fire. It is now an archaeological site that also includes slave quarters, a large formal garden, and the Burwell family cemetery.
