The Virginia Depot is a former train station in Virginia, Minnesota, United States. It was built in 1913 by the Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific Railway. With The station was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Duluth, Winnipeg, and Pacific Depot in 1980 for its local significance in the themes of architecture, commerce, and transportation. It was nominated as a distinctive symbol of Virginia's importance as a major entry point to the Mesabi Range, and of the region's dependence on rail transport to deliver goods and workers and ship out ore. The Virginia Depot occupies a prominent site at the west end of Chestnut Street, the artery running through Virginia's historic downtown. Immediately behind the depot is Silver Lake. Virginia is a city in St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States, on the Mesabi Iron Range. With an economy heavily reliant on large-scale iron ore mining, Virginia is considered the Mesabi Range's commercial center. The population was 8,423 at the 2020 census. Virginia is just south of the Superior National Forest and about south of the Canada–United States border at International Falls, Minnesota, and northwest of Duluth, Minnesota. The Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific Railway is a subsidiary railroad of Canadian National Railway (CN) operating in northern Minnesota, United States. A CN system-wide rebranding beginning in 1995 has seen the DWP logo and name largely replaced by its parent company. The DWP line is CN's connection between International Falls and Duluth, Minnesota, where the railroad connects to a short stretch of the former Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway before following the former Wisconsin Central (both now wholly owned by CN) to Chicago, Illinois. Mesabi Range
The Mesabi Iron Range is a mining district in northeastern Minnesota following an elongate trend containing large deposits of iron ore. It is the largest of four major iron ranges in the region collectively known as the Iron Range of Minnesota. First described in 1866, it is the chief iron ore mining district in the United States. The district is located largely in Itasca and Saint Louis counties. It has been extensively worked since 1892, and has seen a transition from high-grade direct shipping ores through gravity concentrates to the current industry exclusively producing iron ore ( taconite) pellets.
