Virginia's 38th House Of Delegates District
Virginia's 11th House of Delegates district elects one of 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates, the lower house of the state's bicameral legislature. District 11 represents part of Fairfax County. The district is currently represented by Democrat Kaye Kory. Electoral history In the 1982, a general election was held for all Virginia House of Delegates seats following redistricting (typically Virginia's state-level legislative elections are held on odd-number years). That year, Democrat Nora Anderson Squyres narrowly defeated Republican Gwendalyn F. Cody in the contest to represent the 38th district, winning by just 180 votes; however, another general election was held the following year and Cody defeated Squyres. Cody then served a two-year term before being defeated by Democrat Leslie Byrne in 1985. Virginia House Of Delegates
The Virginia House of Delegates is one of the two parts of the Virginia General Assembly, the other being the Senate of Virginia. It has 100 members elected for terms of two years; unlike most states, these elections take place during odd-numbered years. The House is presided over by the Speaker of the House, who is elected from among the House membership by the Delegates. The Speaker is usually a member of the majority party and, as Speaker, becomes the most powerful member of the House. The House shares legislative power with the Senate of Virginia, the upper house of the Virginia General Assembly. Fairfax County, officially the County of Fairfax, is a county in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is part of Northern Virginia and borders both the city of Alexandria and Arlington County and forms part of the suburban ring of Washington, D.C. Kaye Kory
L. Kaye Kory (born April 18, 1947) is an American politician. Since 2010 she has served in the Virginia House of Delegates, representing the 38th district in Fairfax County. She served on the Fairfax County School Board 1999–2009. Kory is a member of the Democratic Party. , Kory serves as the Chair of the Counties, Cities Towns Committee and as a member of the Labor and Commerce Committee, Finance Committee, and Public Safety Committee. Early life Kory was born in Chicago. She attended The American School in Japan, and received a B.A. degree from Oxford College, now part of Miami University in 1969. Redistricting In Virginia
Redistricting in Virginia has been a controversial topic due to allegations of gerrymandering. In the 2017 Virginia General Assembly, all of the redistricting reform bills were killed. Leslie Larkin Byrne (born October 27, 1946) is an American businesswoman and politician. In 1992, she became the first woman elected to the United States House of Representatives from the Commonwealth of Virginia. A member of the Democratic Party, she served for one term (1993–1995) in the 103rd Congress. Early life and career Byrne grew up in Salt Lake City and attended both the University of Utah and Mount Vernon College in Ohio.
