This species is commonly called the meadow viper. It is found in France, Italy, and Greece as well as much of eastern Europe. Several subspecies are recognized. Beyond the highly threatened European population, poorly known populations exist as far to the east as Kazakhstan and northwestern China. Lorenz Müller (18 February 1868 in Mainz – 1 February 1953 in Munich) was a German herpetologist. Professor Lorenz Müller was known for his studies on the Balearic Islands species of the genus ''Podarcis'' (wall lizards) during the 1920s, in which he described several new subspecies, including the now extinct Ratas Island lizard, ''Podarcis lilfordi rodriquezi''. Ernst Schwarz (1 December 1889 – 23 September 1962) was a German zoologist, mammalogist, and herpetologist. Schwarz was born in Frankfurt and studied zoology in Munich. He worked at the Museum of Natural History in Frankfurt and the Zoological Museum in Berlin. In 1929 he became professor of Zoology at the University of Greifswald. He worked at the Natural History Museum in London from 1933 to 1937, when he moved to the United States. He specialised in great ape species.
