Viorel Ștefan
Viorel Ștefan (born 26 July 1954) is a Romanian politician and economist who has served as a Member of the European Court of Auditors for Romania since 2019. He previously served as Deputy Prime Minister of Romania from 2018 to 2019 and as Minister of Public Finance from January to June 2017. Education and career Ștefan graduated in economics from the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University in 1980. He later worked as an accountant at the state company for river navigation, the NAVROM in Galați. After the 1989 revolution, he was appointed the general manager of NAVROM SA and became its president in 1996. He stopped working in 2002, while he was a senator. The European Court of Auditors (ECA; French: ''Cour des comptes européenne'') is one of the seven institutions of the European Union (EU). It was established in 1975 in Luxembourg in order to improve EU financial management. It has 27 members (1 from each EU member-state) supported by approximately 800 civil servants. History The ECA was created by the 1975 Budgetary Treaty and was formally established on 18 October 1977, holding its first session a week later. At that time the ECA was not a formal institution; it was an external body designed to audit the finances of the European Communities. Liviu Dragnea
Liviu Nicolae Dragnea (; born 28 October 1962) is a Romanian engineer and former politician. Starting his career in the Democratic Party (PD), he joined the Social Democratic Party (PSD), eventually becoming its leader. After holding several positions as Minister, he resigned from the cabinet in May 2015, following a conviction in a case involving electoral fraud, for which he received a two-year suspended sentence in April 2016. In December 2016, following that year's legislative election, he became President of the Chamber of Deputies of Romania. In May 2019, he was sent to prison for three and a half years, convicted of arranging payment for two party members employed in fake jobs and paid by a state agency. Simultaneously, his term in the Chamber drew to a close. In July 2021, the prison sentence was lifted, ending his jail time 1 year and 4 months earlier. A medal of merit also exists, but does not confer membership in the order. History The current order continues a tradition going back well over a century.
