Violet, Texas
Violet is a small unincorporated community with a population around 40 in Nueces County, Texas, United States. It lies along State Highway 44, between the cities of Corpus Christi and Robstown. History In the early 1900s, German immigrant farmers moved to the region where cattle were raised, and began to grow crops. In December 1906, Erwin Cushman and Louis Petrus jointly acquired a 1030-acre plot in the area then known as Land Siding. Petrus soon bought out Cushman, and in early 1908, he appointed John W. Hoelscher to sell the land in exchange for a commission of 50 cents (now about $12) per acre. Hoelscher decided to promote the area specifically to German-American Catholic farmers. He advertised in several Texas German newspapers, and secured the endorsement of Reverend Peter Verdaguer, the apostolic vicar of Brownsville (the precursor to the Diocese of Corpus Christi). Nueces County is located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, the population was 353,178, making it the 16th-most populous county in the state. The county seat is Corpus Christi. The county was formed in 1846 from portions of San Patricio County and organized the following year. State Highway 44 (SH 44) is a Texas state highway that runs from west of Encinal to Corpus Christi, Texas. This highway is also known as the Cesar Chavez Memorial Highway outside the city limits of Robstown, Banquete, Agua Dulce, Alice, and Corpus Christi in Nueces and Jim Hogg counties. History SH 44 was originally proposed on April 24, 1919 as a connector route between Waco and Giddings. On July 16, 1923, the southern terminus extended south to LaGrange. By 1926, construction was continuing on the highway, and SH 44 was concurrent with U.S. Highway 77 (US 77). Peter Verdaguer Y Prat
Peter Verdaguer y Prat (Sant Pere de Torelló, December 10, 1835 – Texas, October 26, 1911) was a Catalan-born prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as Vicar Apostolic of Brownsville from 1890 until his death in 1911. Biography Peter Verdaguer y Prat was born in Sant Pere de Torelló, county of Osona in the Province of Barcelona, to Francisco Verdaguer and Maria Prat Verdaguer. He attended the seminaries of Vic and Barcelona before coming to the United States, where he completed his theological studies at St. Vincent's Seminary in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Thaddeus Amat y Brusi, C.M., on December 12, 1862. He then did pastoral work in the Diocese of Monterey-Los Angeles, California, serving as a missionary and pastor of San Bernardino and in Los Angeles.
